The former Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant, who won the FA Cup in 1988, has been named as a substitute for League Two Stevenage, aged 55.
If called into action Beasant, who is the club's goalkeeping coach, would become English football's oldest-ever professional, beating the record of Neil McBain, the manager of New Brighton who in 1947 played in goal against Hartlepool at the age of 51 due to a spate of injuries.
Beasant, who made his professional debut 35 years ago in 1979, would beat that record by four years if he had to replace the regular goalkeeper Chris Day in the match at Carlisle's Brunton Park.
Beasant last played professionally for Brighton in 2003 but made an appearance for North Greenford United in the Southern Football League in 2013.
