Frankie Sutherland: Wimbledon sign QPR midfielder on loan

Last updated at 15:03

AFC Wimbledon have signed Queens Park Rangers midfielder Frankie Sutherland on a one-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old, who is yet to make a senior appearance for QPR, will be with the League Two side until 29 November.

Sutherland had a spell on loan at Leyton Orient last season but his time in east London was cut short by a serious injury on his debut.

He is eligible to play in both the FA Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy competitions for the Dons.

'Frankie is a player we have monitored for the last six months, since he came back from his injury,' Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley told the club website.

'He is a strong, combative midfielder, an intelligent passer of the ball and we have seen his fitness and influence on games grow throughout the season.'

Andy Murray faces his Wimbledon conqueror Grigor Dimitrov for ATP Finals spot

The Scot can seal his place at next month's London showpiece with a Paris Masters win over the man who ended his SW19 reign last summer

London calling: Wimbledon revenge on Dimitrov will book Murray's place at the ATP Finals

Andy Murray can book a ticket to London on Thursday by beating the Bulgarian who crushed his Wimbledon hopes.

Grigor Dimitrov ended the British No.1's defence of his title in the quarter-finals.

Now they meet again in the third round at the Paris Masters, with the Scot needing one more win to guarantee his place at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 next month.

Murray, 27, said: 'If I get to London I deserve to be there, as it's about your results across the whole year.

'My results in most of the tournaments this year - most of the big ones - have been good enough to be in the top eight. It won't be a relief if I qualify, I will just enjoy it.'

Playing in his sixth tournament in a row, Murray beat Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-4 yesterday for his 19th win in 21 matches since the US Open.

He could now catch Stan Wawrinka and finish the season as world No.4.

Milos Raonic, who needs to win the Paris event to qualify for London, spent over eight minutes searching for a suitable TOILET on a mid-match comfort break before beating Jack Sock.

The Canadian said: 'I was taken to a bathroom that had no seat on the toilet.

'I didn't want to squat, so I kept on saying, 'Let's go to another one' andwe ended up going to the locker room.'

Jones bemoans missed chances as East Grinstead lose to Wimbledon

MATT Jones says missed chances were East Grinstead's downfall on Saturday as they lost 4-1 at home to Wimbledon, writes Mark Ritson.

The head coach was left to rue several missed opportunities before the visitors hit Grinstead on the break to clinch a big win.

'It was certainly not what the doctor ordered,' said Jones. 'We knew Wimbledon were tough opposition and they have depth in quality with youth and experience.

'They performed as expected, it was a close game with high skill and pace. It was certainly one for the neutral and a great spectacle.

'It was nip and tuck, it could have gone either way, particularly in the first half, but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal.

'Remarkably we didn't win any penalty corners in the entire game, which is unheard of.

'They snatched one early on but we equalised soon after. We created but didn't put chances away.

'Even at 2-1 and 3-1 we felt we had quality to come back, it was just a case of Wimbledon taking their opportunities.

'The reality was that we got caught on the break and they are a fast team and well-organised.'

Jack Waller, Phil Roper, Ali Brogdon and Henry Weir got the goals for Wimbledon in an entertaining clash.

There were chances at both ends but the visitors took the lead after 20 minutes when Waller opened the scoring on his debut appearance this season.

It didn't take long for Grinstead to hit back when Tony Wilson levelled the scores.

In the second half, Roper put Wimbledon back in front when he converted the only short corner of the match.

Grinstead conceded a third shortly afterwards when the ball was swept across the goal for Brogdon to hit home from close range.

Jones' men worked hard for a way back and forced Wimbledon back, but found goalkeeper James Bailey in good form.

And they were punished when Weir grabbed a fourth on the break, firing home after Ben Marsden set him up inside the D.

Grinstead will be looking to pick themselves up when they face Southgate this weekend.

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Harry Pell heads out on loan

Dons star joins Grimsby Town for an initial month after bit-part role this season

Loan move: Harry Pell

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Harry Pell has joined Conference Premier side Grimsby Town on an initial one month loan.

Pell, 23, was a regular last season for the Dons, making 36 appearances and scoring four goals.

However, he has been restricted to a bit-part role this season with only six substitute appearances due to being behind Sammy Moore and Dannie Bulman in the pecking order.

Dons boss Neal Ardley said: 'He has had limited chances to date and all parties feel a month of competitive football would help Harry get back to his best.'

Pell will not be eligible to play in the FA Cup while is on loan with the Mariners.

Irish millionaire defends his new greyhound stadium proposals

A businessman and a residents' association were forced to defend themselves last night after residents angrily voiced concerns about plans for Plough Lane.

Detailed plans for a £100m new greyhound stadium which were unveiled exclusively to the Wimbledon Guardian last week were presented to residents who picked apart the plans at a public meeting hosted by the Wimbledon Park Residents' Association (WPRA.)

Mr Taggart presents plans to residents

Businessman Paschal Taggart flew in from Dublin to speak at the meeting at Wimbledon Park Hall in Arthur Road.

He announced he would not be submitting a planning application to Merton Council as he expects the AFC Wimbledon bid for a 20,000 seater stadium to be rejected.

He would then plan to buy the land and push ahead with his plan later.

Concerns about his proposals centred around parking, the effect on house prices and congestion, as well as the fact the site, currently home to the Wimbledon Stadium, is on a high-risk flood plain.

This means it is highly likely to flood.

Left to right, Peter West and Iain Simpson from WPRA and Mr Taggart, right.

But a residents' survey of 200 people by WPRA indicated they preferred the greyhound stadium.

Speaking at the meeting, attended by just 30 people, WPRA chairman Iain Simpson said: 'We have tried our best to be as impartial as we can by examining both proposals.

'A significant number were in support of the greyhound stadium.

'We took our view based on the survey and the fact that we think the scale of the AFC Wimbledon plans are inappropriate.'

A report was carried out by RPS consulting for WPRA and Hume Consulting, which Mr Taggart is behind.

Speaking about the fact he amended plans based on the RPS report, Mr Taggart said: 'A doctor's surgery seemed like a good community thing to have - there's no money in that for us.

'We put in a pre-school because it seems to fit.'

He said the current stadium was a disgrace and he would not visit it with his wealthy friends.

He added: 'My figures would be very profitable - I have done this several times.

'I'm a businessman first and a greyhound fan second.'

Mr Taggart clashed with residents on his 'relaxed' view of transport to and from the proposed site.

Concerns were raised over 100 parking places for 340 apartments although there would be a multi-storey car park on the site as well, as well as the number of taxis driving to and from the stadium at night.

Peter West from WPRA said: 'We think transport will be a big problem.

'If we have 10,000 supporters arriving and the only way they can get there is walking through residential areas, it is not very desirable.

'We do not share Mr Taggart's relaxed attitude about transport.'

Mr Taggart said if AFC Wimbledon's plans are approved by the council, he will say goodbye to Wimbledon forever.

He said: 'If Galliard Homes get their planning it's all over for us and it is goodbye.

'I have lost more deals than I have won, it doesn't bother me.

'I don't live here.'

AFC Wimbledon chief executive Erik Samuelson said the club would be submitting its plans to Merton Council 'imminently.'

The council's planning committee will decide whether to approve the plans in due course.

In a web poll on wimbledonguardian.co.uk 55 per cent of votes were in favour of the AFC Wimbledon plans compared to 39 per cent in favour of the new greyhound stadium plans.

Five per cent of the 4,581 votes cast were for something else to be constructed on the site.

Review of The Perfect Murder at New Wimbledon Theatre

Fans of the crime writer Peter James and his detective Roy Grace will love this production. 'The Perfect Murder' is a dark comedy thriller that follows the troubled marriage of Victor Smiley (Robert Dawes) and his wife Joan (Dawn Steele). Victor is conducting a relationship with Kamila, a Croatian prostitute (Simona Armstrong), whilst his wife is also having an affair with Don (Gray O'Brien), the odd job man. Both Victor and Joan are planning the perfect murder - of one another of course! Enter the fifth member of the cast - the very young, fledgling detective, Roy Grace (Thomas Howes), investigating his first case. This production is full of twists and turns. There are some expected outcomes too - the use of the prominently positioned freezer being one! This is not a subtle murder mystery; this is a loud, outlandish dark comedy, with poor Roy Grace looking very uncomfortable as he relies on Kamila to help him, by means of her psychic powers!

The use of the split level stage ensured a smooth transition between the brothel in Brighton to the Smileys' home at Saltdean. The use of lighting and sound, particularly in the television scenes, produced many gasps and sharp intakes of breath from the audience. Tense moments were marked by jangly music or strings being played, the volume gradually increasing, and dark silhouettes illuminated from behind or long shadows being thrown - I found these stereotypical moments of tension to be quite funny but many sitting around me were made nervous. Screams, reminiscent of 'The Woman In Black', made us all jump. This production was certainly not short of highly dramatic moments!

The actors played their parts well and entertained the audience, using all their energy and skill to maintain the tension in this fast-paced drama. This production has been touring for a year now and the writer, Peter James, clearly has a huge following, having sold over 15 million Roy Grace detective novels worldwide. James and the stage adaptor, Shaun McKenna, have worked closely together as McKenna has turned James' novella into a stage production. The director, Ian Talbot, too has been with the production from the start and next year all three plan to bring one of James' most popular books, 'Dead Simple' to the stage. I think there is much to learn from 'The Perfect Murder' that will help to make 'Dead Simple' more successful.

For what do you do when you dislike both central characters who are intent upon murdering each other? I would happily have aided and abetted either one and then killed the remaining wife/husband in order to clear such cold, cynical, unpleasant people from the stage. When you don't care or like or sympathise with the two central characters, how can you develop any interest or concern for what happens to them? Neither Victor nor Joan shows any care, concern or love for their married partners and we have verbal duel, after duel, after duel, each trying to hurt the other more. In fact, let's suspend all belief and disbelief, this play is not even trying to be realistic. I think it's a comedy but as the laughs are all at the expense of hurting others, they often make you feel uncomfortable, not amused, with lines like Joan's 'I'm still attractive' and his reply 'to flies'. Joan and Victor deserve to die. So who do we care about? Not the Cockney slang addict, Don, who spends all his time explaining himself: 'Hovis...brown bread...dead'; nor the prostitute who charges for her kisses. Roy James is the answer; we could love him, but his role is so small in this play that we barely get to know him. We need to see him detecting and not relying on a psychic prostitute to tell him what to do next.

'The Perfect Murder' is part thriller; part murder plot; part ghost story; part detective story; part comedy - and therein lies its problem. It is trying to be all things to all people and thus falls through the cracks for me, but it clearly has an audience for dedicated lovers of DI Roy James. My advice for next year's 'Dead Simple'? Bring the Detective to the front, make him the protagonist that we care for, and then we can enjoy watching the criminals being brought to justice. 'The Perfect Murder' is full of unexpected twists and the ending is certainly clever. I'm not even going to tell you who gets murdered...

Neal Ardley eyes Cup run with 'unplayable' Akinfenwa

Former FA Cup Semi-Finalist Neal Ardley says he'll be getting 'knighted' if he guides his AFC Wimbledon side there this year - but with Adebayo Akinfenwa, a good run is possible.

Ardley and his League Two side will be in the hat for Monday's First Round Proper draw, which will be screened live on the BBC from St. George's Park, and the Dons manager admitted he is feeling the magic of The Cup.

'The FA Cup always has, and always will be, the biggest cup competition. And I think recently, for me, it has just started getting a bit of its pizzazz back,' he told TheFA.com.

'For clubs in the lower and non-Leagues, it's such a big deal if they can get to that Third Round. Not just financially, everything. Everyone wants a good run.

'You always look to what you can have. It's really hard to get there, but if you can, then that brings a merry-go-round of attention for teams.

'Cup games are something special and we'll be hoping for a home tie as we want our fans supporting us.'

In his playing days for the original Wimbledon side, Ardley helped the south London club to the Semi-Final of the competition back in 1997, before a Gianfranco Zola-inspired Chelsea ended their dreams with a 3-0 win at Arsenal's Highbury.

Despite the defeat, Ardley still looks fondly on their run that season, and he is dreaming of leading the Dons on another memorable journey this season.

'It was the biggest day of my career,' he said. 'We'd had a great season, went 18 games unbeaten and we'd got to the League Cup semi-finals as well as The FA Cup.

'We had Chelsea at Highbury, and played really well until Zola produced a fantastic bit of skill to score that goal.

'If I got them to the Semi-Finals, I'd be up for a knighthood,' he continued. 'To get them to the Third Round would be a great achievement for me. That's what we'll be trying our best to do.'

Akinfenwa has scored eight goals already this season

And Ardley's Wimbledon side possess a huge weapon in their artillery. 17 stone striker Akinfenwa, recently named as the strongest player in the world on the new FIFA 15 game, has already fired eight goals this season after joining the club from Northampton Town in the summer.

After scoring twice against Bury recently, the heavyweight forward said he feels like he's firing on all cylinders: 'I feel like I've got my mojo back,' he told the Daily Mirror.

'When I'm on form there are not many defenders that can handle me. When I'm not on it, I look cumbersome. But when I'm on it, there's not much they can do.'

His manager echoed his thoughts, saying he's delighted to have him in Wimbledon colours.

'Anyone that tries to play one-on-one with him is going to come off second best. He's unplayable,' Ardley said.

'I've said it before that he is one of the best headers of a ball I've worked with, and I'm delighted that I've got him.'

'What doesn't he bring to the team? He is the point of attack, he holds the ball up, he's clever and he brings people into play - and if your team gets a chance to put a cross in then there's a great chance he'll score.'

The draw will kick-off on BBC Two at 7pm on Monday with three-time FA Cup winner Phil Neville and Derbyshire FA's Coach of the Year Tammy Snape as draw guests alongside host Mark Chapman.

Beloved pooch lost on Wimbledon Common saved by stranger on the A3

Dog owners who faced a harrowing 24 hours when their beloved pooch went missing on Wimbledon Common have praised strangers for rescuing him from the A3.

Fourteen-year-old Miika, a German Shepherd and Labrador cross, was on a lunchtime stroll with his dog walker on Tuesday when something spooked him and he ran off.

Owners Agata Boczkowska-Young, 35 and Will Young, 33, were both at work when they received the dreaded phone call.

The couple, who adopted Miika from Canada six years ago, rushed back to Wimbledon to search for him, alerting the rangers and nearby hospitals and vets.

Mrs Boczkowska-Young said: 'It was the worst 24 hours of my life - I was so devastated.

'When we adopted him in Canada he was on the list to be put down.

'He's the most important thing for us really because we don't have kids and the whole family love him.

'He gets scared quite easily because we adopted him when he was eight and he had some trauma in his life.

'We think it was just a series of circumstances which made him get lost on the common.'

The couple, who live in Earlsfield, searched the common until midnight while their dog walker put up posters around Wimbledon.

They returned the next morning with more posters and asked the police, rangers and dog walkers if they had seen Miika.

Then they got a call from the Wimbledon Common Ranger's Office saying a dog owner had found a lost dog on the A3.

Rescued: A tired Miika after he was picked up on the A3

Mrs Boczkowska-Young said: 'Our dog walker was driving around when she suddenly saw this guy who found him so she drove back and got him.

'Cars were slowing down and some cars were trying to shepherd him but he was petrified and this random dog walker drove ahead and stopped.

'Because his boot was full of dogs Miika must have felt safe to jump in and the man called the warden.'

Miika was tired and hungry but uninjured when he was rescued.

Mrs Boczkowska-Young said: 'The fact that he hasn't been hit by a car I know there was a lot of luck but I just didn't expect that and we are just so happy that people were that kind and it was lovely to see all the solidarity with the dog walkers getting involved and looking after him.

'We don't blame our dog walker at all and she will continue walking our dog. It was a series of really bad circumstances. It's an amazing story that he survived this.

'My husband says he's the most resilient dog he's ever met.'

Breeder's Cup Wants To Be The Wimbledon of Racing

Drew Scheinman's choice of a breakfast place was fitting. No crowed public restaurants, but something quiet and private. So we're talking Breeder's Cup at the Core Club, an upscale members-only spot on Manhattan's east side, unpretentious but exclusive.

'It's great to have a quiet place to come to and get some business done,' says Scheinman, the sports marketing veteran hired by the Breeder's Cup board of directors in May 2013 to take over as Chief Marketing Officer. The Core Club also provides a glimpse into the core audience that Scheinman - who's been through the rounds with the New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles. Madison Square Garden and Coca-Cola - wants to woo to his event.

Upscale chic. Money, celebrities, private jets. That's the atmosphere he's building in Santa Anita, Calif. this week as the Nov. 1 race approaches.

'We want to lay claim to being the best of the best,' he says. There are already numbers to bear that out: the highest purse in the horse racing game isn't at the Kentucky Derby, it's at the Breeder's Cup, whose champion rakes in $5 million and where the two -day payout for a series of races is $26 million.

Sure, it'll be great if the presence of near-Triple Crown winner California Chrome helps NBC's broadcast this Saturday to turn in a good showing - viewership has jumped around between 1.6 million and 4 million over the past three years - but the mass ratings are secondary. What Scheinman really wants is for the well heeled to see his race as a lifestyle event. To come and celebrate the old school notion of horse racing as the sport of kings.

By looking to milk that upscale market as much as possible, Scheinman is taking the Breeder's Cup to where most of the sports world is going: away from the masses and toward the premier customer. Football and baseball teams no longer care about those extra 10,000 or so people sitting upstairs, they care about who's sitting in the club seats and dining in their stadium restaurants. Daytona Speedway is undergoing a big upgrade to accommodate more corporate entertaining, not to draw more people. And so it goes.

The Breeder's Cup, though, fits the upscale profile a little bit more naturally. Call it the Wimbledon of the horse racing circuit. The typical attendee is a college graduate earning six figures annually; the average horse owner is worth about $200 million. For Rodeo Drive retailers, Breeder's Cup week is the second-busiest of the year, after Christmas. No wonder the cover of this year's brochure aimed at sponsors doesn't even include a picture of a horse. It shows a crowd of smiling, well dressed people enjoying cocktails and soaking up the atmosphere. Again, it's all about the lifestyle.

Scheinman has no shortage of people and events to drive home the message. A big stable of celebrities, including Rick Pitino, Kate Upton and Joe Torre will be doing events and spreading the word on social media. Chef Bobby Flay did a lengthy interview in People Magazine and People.com in which he told all about his love of horse racing. This week, Flay will be hosting an elegant 'Taste of the World' dining event featuring 16 chefs from the 16 countries that will be represented at the race. A Wednesday night poker event in L.A. ('Hollywood & Horses Holed 'em') is being co-chaired by MGM CEO Gary Barber and Warner Brothers CEO Kevin Tsujihara. The buy-in is five grand.

Upscale sponsors include Sentinent Jet, the private aviation service that will fly in some of the high rollers, and Tito's Vodka, the high end booze that sells to country clubs. Swiss watch maker Longines is the official time keeper. The message is clear enough: for people who like the finer things, the Breeders' Cup is in, it's the place to be. As for the future, Scheinman wants the same things, just more of them. He's already thinking about the 2015 Breeder's Cup, which will shift to the heart of horse racing at Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky after three years in California. 'I want to expand this from two days into a five-day extravaganza,' he says.

The jet set may or may not have time for that kind of party. But why not try? It beats the opera or the latest art exhibit. And it's not as if they'll be watching the World Series.

Micky Adams says Tranmere were unlucky not to win against AFC Wimbledon

New boss pleased with Rovers' resilience

Tranmere Rovers against Wimbledon

Micky Adams was thrilled with the resilience his Tranmere side showed as they twice came from behind to draw with Wimbledon.

Before kick-off, it felt like Rovers' drought in front of goal was as long as the wait for a British win just down the road at SW19.

But after nine hours of football, on-loan hit man Armand Gnanduillet struck twice to help the Super Whites move off bottom spot in the Football League.

And after firing a number of blanks in Adams' first game in charge against Mansfield on Tuesday, the new manager was pleased to break the duck.

'I thought they were excellent today,' he said. 'A week ago at Oxford, I saw them concede goals and it affected them. Their heads went down.

'But I've tried to instil into them that whilst there's minutes left in a game of football, don't drop your heads, keep going and show spirit and determination.

'I think that was there second half. I was really pleased with the effort.

'We were unfortunate not to win it in the end.'

Gnanduillet was Adams' first signing at Prenton Park, joining on a one-month deal from Chesterfield less than a week ago.

And although the Rovers boss is already chuffed with the Frenchman's impact, he thinks he still has plenty more to offer.

'I would like to see him more in the box,' he continued.

'He wants to come and get involved in things. I think if we're going to play to his strengths, in and around the box is where he's most effective.'

As valuable as Tranmere's point was, Adams was also thrilled to see Liam Ridehalgh back in action.

The left-back rose off the bench just before the hour mark to make his first appearance of the season.

Hampered by an ankle injury in the summer, Rovers have been desperate to have the former Huddersfield defender fit because he possesses a quality not many in the squad do, something the manager was quick to point out.

'I'm sure he's been sorely missed by Rob and his staff,' he said.

'Luckily for me I've got him fit now, he's going to be a real bonus for us.

'He's got the one thing that we haven't got in this squad - a left foot.

'It's the most unbalanced squad I've ever seen in terms of left footers and right footers, so I'm pleased to have him back.'

Ardley on AFC Wimbledon v Tranmere

Last updated at 18:32

Tranmere Rovers moved off the bottom of League Two after Armand Gnanduillet's double earned a draw at AFC Wimbledon.

Jack Smith gave the hosts the lead with a clever chip after a failed one-two with Sean Rigg down the left wing.

But the Chesterfield loanee equalised with a 25-yard effort that crept in at goalkeeper James Shea's near post.

Adebayo Akinfenwa headed in his eighth goal in nine games to put AFC Wimbledon back ahead, before Gnanduillet levelled again, nodding in Max Power's corner.

AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley told BBC London 94.9:

'It's hard because you start trying to protect your lead, the players start dropping that little bit deeper and the ball starts sticking at their end.

'As the game wore on, I could have brought off several players who were starting to feel the affects of two 90 minute games over the course of this week.

'We lacked the quality in the second-half, we didn't play with as much bravery and our game wasn't as free-flowing.'

Roxholme Dream fastest in Wimbledon Leger

Chicago: Raced well clear to take Leger heat three at Wimbledon

ROXHOLME DREAM is now 9-2 favourite with Hills after she looked a special staying prospect when routing TV Trophy winner King Kane in heat four as she set the standard in the opening round of the William Hill St Leger over 687m at Wimbledon on Saturday.

The pair were close in the market with Roxholme Dream sent off the marginal favourite at 5-4 but there was nothing close about the contest as Hayley Keightley's bitch flashed out of traps en route to a superb 16.09sec sectional and proceeded to keep up the intensity throughout.

King Kane eventually got past Fivestar Clipper but there was no prospect of the leader being threatened as Roxholme Dream went on to score by nearly five lengths in 41.55sec.

Chicago was another impressive front-running winner in heat three with Seamus Cahill's dog in command virtually from the second the traps opened.

Grand Prix champion Farley Rio, who is with Cahill for his Leger campaign, was the closest pursuer but his heart was broken along the back straight for the second time with Chicago galloping on resolutely to beat finisher Droopys Bear by four lengths 41.75sec.

Romantic Rambo, who set a new track record for the 687m distance on Derby final night, made it three wins from three Wimbledon starts with an emphatic victory in heat two.

Kevin Cobbold's dog was led early by Droopys London but always looked ready to have the measure of that rival and went on at the fourth bend, pulling away to score by four and a half lengths from outsider Beatties Wild in 41.74sec.

Touch Tackle, the big mover in the outright market after a superb start to his staying career, survived a real scare to qualify in third, staying on strongly after a troubled early run.

Millwards Teddy was another leading fancy who really had to work hard to progress, the Yorkshire Leger hero eventually taking second behind impressive kennelmate Billys Bullet in heat six.

The winner was slowly away but got into the contest - which had been reduced to five runners following the withdrawal of weight variation Bam Bams Barney - when Great Deal ran off at the first bend and took full advantage as he went to beat Millwards Teddy by over five lengths in 41.61sec.

The competition got under way with victory for Paul Young's Teejayspowerhawk in the opening heat where he led 2013 runner-up Fear Emoski into the first bend and was always in control afterwards.

In a contest where nothing came close to threatening the duo, Teejayspowerhawk kept on well to prove his stamina as he beat Fear Emoski by just over two lengths in 41.83sec

Tony Collett's Racenight Jenny made a winning British debut in heat eight as she collared long-time leader Jet Stream Duke off the final bend to win in 41.94sec with the Irish challenge ending as Ballymac Bonnie got going too late in fourth to follow Barefoot Agent's earlier exit from the competition.

There were a couple of scrappy heats with June Harvey's Fizzypop Magic rallying to take the fifth in 42.07sec, while John Mullins' Borna Champ (42.01sec) came from last to first in heat six where the leaders bunched approaching the fifth.

East Grinstead's unbeaten record is ended by Wimbledon

EAST Grinstead's 100 per cent record in the England Hockey League Premier Division is over after a 4-1 defeat at home to Wimbledon tonight (Saturday).

The Gladiators were beaten at Saint Hill as the Dons struck three times in the second half, bringing to an end the hosts' 100 per cent record so far this season.

Jack Waller gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half, but his opener was cancelled out soon after by Grinstead's Tony Wilson as the sides went in level at 1-1.

But goals from Phil Roper, Ali Brogdon and Henry Weir gave Wimbledon victory, as Grinstead dropped to third in the table, three points behind leaders Surbiton and one behind second-placed Beeston.

The Gladiators do, however, have a game in hand at home against Southgate next Saturday.

AFC Wimbledon 2 Tranmere Rovers 2

Hitman Gnanduillet scores two to help rescue much needed point for Rovers

Armand Gnanduillet

Armand Gnanduillet twice rescued Tranmere as a valuable point in South London saw them move off the bottom of the Football League in a 2-2 draw with Wimbledon.

The result extends Rovers' winless run to ten games, but there were plenty of positives to take as they showed a new found resilience and potency in front of goal, something that has been so clearly missed in recent weeks.

For Gnanduillet, he was the second French person to shock Wimbledon just sixteen months after France triumphed at SW19 through Marion Bartoli in the Ladies' Singles Championships.

But in the different surroundings of the Cherry Red Records Stadium, on-loan hit-man Gnanduillet played a starring role as Micky Adams continued his unbeaten start at Prenton Park.

With Jason Koumas injured for a fortnight due to a groin injury, Adams named an unchanged line up from the side that drew 0-0 with Mansfield on Tuesday.

That meant new signing Josh Thompson, who joined from Colchester on Friday, had to make do with a place on the bench, whilst there was a welcome return for Liam Ridehalgh who was also named amongst the substitutes.

The full-back, valued as much for versatility as his ability, has missed the start of the season after picking up an ankle problem in the summer.

The hosts started the game on the front foot, with Rovers struggling to get out of their own half.

Beastly front-man Adebayo Akinfenwa was always going to be a handful for the visitors, after scoring seven goals in his last eight games - precisely five more than Tranmere had managed over the same period.

And he had two early chances, sending one header just wide and firing a volley over the bar.

But the Dons opener came from a somewhat unexpected source, as full-back Jack Smith netted only his third goal in five years.

Whether he meant it or not, Owain fon Williams will be seriously disappointed with the manner of the strike, as Smith, receiving the ball at a tight angle in the box, chipped the ball over the Rovers stopper and into the net.

In recent weeks, that would have been enough to kill Tranmere off, but after 535 minutes of football, loanee Armand Gnanduillet finally broke a goal drought that extended back to September 20th.

It was a somewhat fortuitous strike, but brought about by some brilliant build up play, as the French striker turned wonderfully before hitting a tame, bobbling shot into the bottom corner from 25-yards.

At 1-1 and all to play for, the game begun to settle down, with defender Adam Barrett sending a header round the post for the hosts, whilst Gnanduillet and Michael Ihiekwe fired off target for Micky Adams' side.

But with half-time fast approaching, the Dons re-took the lead, and this time it was Akinfenwa who found the net.

Famed for his strength and size in the lower leagues, the former Gillingham man is used to winning aerial duels.

And with 44-minutes on the clock, another went his way as the striker rose highest at the back post to guide a header into the corner of the net.

Micky Adams tried to shake things up through good use of his bench after the break, throwing a third man up front at the expense of a defender in the shape of Kayode Odejayi.

The switch meant Danny Holmes was pushed up to right-midfield, and he saw one shot deflected wide for a corner before Odejayi fired straight at the 'keeper from 18-yards.

And all those changes paid off on 66-minutes as Gnanduillet grabbed his second of the afternoon with a towering header.

Rovers had been pressing and from Max Power's corner, the striker, who had not scored in 13 games this season, leapt highest to nod home a powerful header.

Tranmere now had the momentum and went in search of a valuable winner.

Danny Holmes was enjoying himself on the right, finding plenty of time and space to put crosses into the box, whilst Odejayi was creating havoc in the middle.

The game became stretched as both teams piled forward, but that killer ball was always lacking.

The Dons came closest when substitute Adebayo Azeez rushed on to Akinfenwa's ball, only to be foiled by fon Williams who was quickly off his line to block, whilst at the other end George Donnelly volleyed over.

The final chance meanwhile came to the hosts, but a stunning last-ditch tackle from Michael Ihiekwe prevented Azeez again from having a goalscoring opportunity.

The game therefore finished all square, but Micky Adams will have been delighted at not only the impact his substitutes, but also the resilience Rovers showed to come from behind.

And with Hartlepool losing at Cambridge, Rovers jumped into 23rd place in League Two, meaning the table makes slightly better reading.

AFC Wimbledon V Tranmere - view commentary, squad, and statistics of the game live.

Beere only worry for Dons

Teenage midfielder Tom Beere is AFC Wimbledon's only injury doubt ahead of the visit of Tranmere.

Beere has returned to training after a hamstring problem but suffered a setback when he cut his toe, although manager Neal Ardley expects him to be available.

Ardley otherwise has a full-strength squad to choose from and could stick with the side held 0-0 by Plymouth on Tuesday night.

Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs, who have scored 16 goals between them this season, are set to continue up front despite drawing a blank in their last two matches.

Liam Ridehalgh could make his season bow for Tranmere.

The full-back sustained a pre-season ankle injury and is yet to appear for a side currently bottom of Sky Bet League Two, but new boss Micky Adams expects him to be 'in the equation'.

Fellow defender Danny Woodards has returned to training from a foot injury, although this fixture may come too soon for him.

Left-back Ben Davies is back at Preston following the expiration of his loan spell, midfielder Jason Koumas remains out with a groin strain while Cole Stockton (pelvis) and Matt Hill (Achilles) are missing too.

Tide starting to turn in battle for Wimbledon

Paschal Taggart has cut his planned apartments to 348 on expert advice

DIANE McLEAN, who is leading the We Want Wimbledon campaign, on Wednesday said she felt there was a growing view that the Galliards development plan around a football stadium for AFC Wimbledon 'was seen as simply impractical given the scale of housing required to fund it.'

She explained its enabling scheme, which involves 600 apartments, faced major planning hurdles 'due to the major flood plain and transport issues.'

Paschal Taggart, who is behind a rival plan that includes a world class greyhound track, has now revised his scheme to reflect expert advice.

'I don't expect AFC Wimbledon to have any chance of success - they need a genie in a bottle to get through the serious problems,' Taggart this week told the Wimbledon Guardian.

His number of planned apartments have been cut from 550 to 348, with fewer car parking places as a result. A greyhound stadium is seen as more viable.

Taggart added that tactically he might not submit an application at all, because he believes the AFC Wimbledon bid had no chance of success and would be rejected straight away.

His new plan will be on show at a meeting organised by Wimbledon Park Residents Association - who crucially are backing greyhound racing over football - at Wimbledon Park Hall in Arthur Road, Wimbledon, on Tuesday, October 28, from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Taggart is due to appear on RPGTV on Sunday, November 23.

Possession 54% 46% 90 mins AFC Wimbledon Plymouth Argyle

Last updated at 22:52

AFC Wimbledon were made to pay for missed chances as they and Plymouth played out a goalless draw.

The game's best chance fell to Andy Frampton on the stroke of half-time but the Dons defender somehow found the side-netting from just six yards out.

Earlier, Matt Tubbs' low effort had been tipped around the near post by Argyle goalkeeper Luke McCormick.

After the break, a looping Adebayo Akinfenwa hit the crossbar and that was the closest either side came to a goal.

AFC Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley told BBC London 94.9:

'It was quite full-blooded, with a lot of players running hard and putting bodies on the line. There was no inch given.

'I think it was probably a fair result. Both defences and keepers played really, really well.

'Every player has had a decent game and played for the team. I asked for a response after the Wycombe game and I got it in their performance levels.'

THE OPPOSITION

WIMBLEDON will be boosted by the return of midfielder Dannie Bulman for the visit of Argyle.

The 35-year-old was suspended for the 2-0 defeat away to League Two leaders Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday after being booked five times this season.

Bulman turned down a new contract with League One outfit Crawley Town before moving to Wimbledon on a free transfer in June.

He was one of several experienced players who were recruited by Dons' boss Neal Ardley over the summer.

Bulman had started every league game for Wimbledon this season before sitting out the trip to Wycombe.

He is likely to return to the team tonight at the expense of Jake Nicholson and resume his partnership in the centre of midfield with Sammy Moore.

Among the other close season captures for Ardley were strikers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs, and former Oxford United midfielder Sean Rigg.

Centre-back Mark Phillips also arrived from Southend United but he suffered an injury in pre-season and his appearances have been limited as a result.

That led to him signing on loan for Football Conference Premier club Aldershot Town earlier this month.

Goalkeeper James Shea, 23, a product of Arsenal's youth academy, has impressed after completing a move from part-timers Harrow Borough in the summer.

Millionaire businessman reveals shock new greyhound plans for Wimbledon ...

The battle to redevelop Wimbledon stadium took a dramatic twist this morning when an Irish businessman unveiled plans for a far smaller greyhound stadium, fewer apartments and a pre-school.

Paschal Taggart, the man behind the existing £200m greyhound stadium plan, rang the Wimbledon Guardian from Dublin to say he had significantly scaled-back his proposals in response to a report commissioned by the Wimbledon Park Residents' Association (WPRA) and Hume Consulting.

What do you think of the plans? Let us know at letters@wimbledonguardian.co.uk.

Paschal Taggart

He believed the move would deal a death-blow to AFC Wimbledon's dream to use the site for a football stadium allowing the team to finally return to the borough.

AFC's plans for the stadium in Plough Lane, Wimbledon, were expected to be submitted to Merton Council 'very soon' according to chief executive Erik Samuelson.

Mr Samuelson remained silent today on the revised plans for a greyhound stadium.

The report last month said the greyhound stadium bid was 'considered a more sustainable and robust proposal at this stage of development.'

This was based on what the experts called weaknesses in AFC Wimbledon proposals to address transport, road network, flooding and drainage issues.

Mr Taggart, who is based in Dublin, said the cost of the greyhound stadium project was halved to £100m by the re-think and would ease traffic in the area around Plough Lane.

Revised: The new apartment block

He said the new plan would have space to house a Sure Start pre-school, doctor's surgery and space for Christopher's Squash Club and sports injury clinic with a drop-off lay-by outside.

The number of apartments have been slashed from 550 to 230, with fewer car parking places as a result, and a small retail space.

The greyhound racing stadium itself would include a four storey stadium including the ground floor, and be reduced from 4,500 seats to 3,000.

The proposed four storey stadium building

Mr Taggart, who will present plans to residents next week, said: 'We have reduced plans substantially.

'We are waiting for the other side to submit their plans.

'The reason for that is they (Galliard Homes) own the site.

The overall site plan.

'I don't expect AFC Wimbledon to have any chance of success - they need a genie in a bottle to get through the serious problems.'

Merton Council will eventually decide which plan to approve.

Mr Taggart said he might not submit an application at all, because he believes the AFC Wimbledon bid had no chance of success and would be rejected straight away.

A plan for the ground floor of the stadium.

He said the land could then go up for sale by Galliard Homes, and he would buy it.

He added: 'This is all tactical.

'Our plan will be a lovely blend of apartments and a beautiful stadium.

'It will be a world class stadium.

'Everyone thinks this one is far better.'

The new plans will be on show at a meeting organised by WPRA at Wimbledon Park Hall in Arthur Road, Wimbledon, on Tuesday, October 28, from 7.30pm to 9pm.
