(wk/mr)

David Cameron given Wimbledon tennis lesson by ex

He asked commentator and ex-tennis pro Castle for a match after delivering his speech at the Tory Party conference last week

Tennis tussle: Andrew Castle and David Cameron

Prime Minister David Cameron was given a lesson in tennis by TV's Andrew Castle at Wimbledon today.

Cameron, 46, texted commentator and ex-tennis pro Castle after delivering his speech at the Tory Party conference last week asking for a match.

The Sunday People reports that Castle was more than happy to oblige the Prime Minister - and won easily.

The Prime Minister is a well known tennis fan, having watched Andy Murray triumph at Wimbledon.

He once allegedly turned down a phone conversation with Barack Obama when playing his Old Etonian pal Charlie Brooks.

Pat Cash spotted Cameron and Castle 'knocking-up' at Wimbledon and wrote about it on Twitter.

Not every day I walk on to a court and see Prime Minister David Cameron hitting w @andrewcastle63. then again it's All England Club, Wimby

- Pat Cash (@TheRealPatCash) October 5, 2013

Andrew Castle said ahead of whipping the PM: 'It will be a restorative for David after the conference season.

'He said in the text he sent me after he'd made that speech: 'I need a game of tennis'.'

Castle, 49, added. 'In my view, it is very important that we exercise the man who is leading this country, so that he is fit and well.

'I also think that it is most important that we punish our Prime Minister every now and again, so he remembers who we all are, and has proper respect for us.

'I do that by giving him a good spanking on the tennis court.'

Former Wimbledon champion Martina Hingis quizzed by police over 'attack on ...

Estranged husband Thibault Hutin claims she beat him and took valuables Swiss police have questioned youngest-ever Grand Slam champion, 33 Miss Hingis has declined to comment on the allegations

By Mail Foreign Service

Former Wimbledon champion Martina Hingis has been questioned by Swiss police after her estranged husband said he was attacked by the tennis star and her family.

Thibault Hutin, a French equestrian athlete who married Miss Hingis in 2010, accused the 33-year-old and her mother of beating and scratching him before taking his valuables.

He also claimed that the mother's boyfriend hit him with a DVD player during the alleged assault on September 23.

A police spokesman said the tennis star, her mother Melanie Molitor and her mother's boyfriend Mario Widmer were interviewed last week.

The local justice department will decide possible further action, but no timetable has been set for a decision.

Mr Hutin, 26, spoke to the Swiss press last month about the alleged attack.

He claimed he was 'beaten and scratched' by Hingis and her mother, and then 'whacked' on the head with a DVD player by the mother's boyfriend.

He said that he was so 'terrified' he had moved into a hotel and plans to return to his native France.

He added: 'Naturally, my upbringing forbids me to hit women.'

Mr Hutin said that after fleeing he realised his wallet and credit cards were missing, and then returned with police to reclaim them.

'I was shocked. I would never have thought it could go so far. I'm really afraid,' he said.

The private life of the couple, who wed in 2010, had hit the headlines in July after Mr Hutin claimed Miss Hingis had destroyed their marriage with repeated infidelity.

Miss Hingis responded only by saying that the couple had separated at the start of the year.

Although she is still only 33, Hingis effectively retired from top-level tennis six years ago, following a series of injuries.

She had been a child prodigy who became the youngest Grand Slam champion of all time when she won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1996, aged 15 years and nine months.

She was still 16 when she won Wimbledon in 1997, one of her five Grand Slam singles titles.

Ligament injuries in her ankles meant she stopped playing tennis in 2002, aged just 22. She returned to the game in 2006, but retired the following year.

She came out of retirement this year to play doubles with Daniela Hantuchova at tournaments including the U.S. Open, although it is not thought this was the beginning of a full-time return to the game.

Miss Hingis has declined to comment on the allegations.

Watching Maria Sharapova win Wimbledon is best memory: Grigor Dimitrov

ATP Tennis 30 Oct 2013 - 22:23 / by Talal Dar / reads 40.Source:

Tennis: In an interview with Daily Mail, Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov revealed that watching Maria Sharapova win Wimbledon in 2004 is his best Tennis memory and his dream partner is former world no.1 Andre Agassi.

What is the best match you have ever played?

The best match was when I beat Novak Djokovic in the second round in Madrid earlier this year [Dimitrov beat the then-world No 1 7-6, 6-7, 6-3].

What is the worst?

The worst was against Djokovic three weeks later in the third round at the French Open [Dimitrov lost 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in just one hour and 44 minutes].

If you could team up in doubles with any player from history, who would it be and why?

I would like to play with Andre Agassi. His returns would make things easier.

Who are your best friends in the locker room and what do you get up to with them as you travel the world?

I don't have one in particular, I think we are all pretty friendly with each other and of course there are a lot of jokes here and there. Overall I have a good relationship with everyone.

The biggest jokers are definitely Dmitry Tursunov, Michael Llodra with his funny stuff and Robert Lindstedt as well.

What is the strangest or funniest question you have been asked in press?

I had a Q&A the other day and they asked me when was the last time I camped outside. That was very weird.

What is your most memorable moment watching sport?

I am going to go with my girlfriend Maria winning Wimbledon at 17 years old in 2004. That was a tremendous effort.

What is your favourite travel destination away from the tennis tour?

Los Angeles.

What is your favourite song and film of all time?

I don't have one song in particular. I'll go with the Notebook for my favourite movie. I really like it.

What would be your last meal on earth?

I'll start with foie gras, then steak and fries and I'll have a lemon sorbet for dessert.

Which three people would you invite to the meal?

My mum, dad and girlfriend.

If there was one rule in tennis you could change, what would it be?

Play with the same type of balls every week.

Former Wimbledon semifinalist Jelena Dokic is back after surgery

WTA Tennis 30 Oct 2013 - 08:36 / by Talal Dar / reads 82.Source:

Tennis: Jelena Dokic has revealed that as late as three months after surgery to repair her badly damaged wrist, she feared she might never play tennis again.

The 30-year-old former world No.4, who hasn't played since withdrawing from a tournament in April, 2012, is working with Todd Woodbridge to regain her condition and is aiming to gain a wildcard entry to the Australian Open. She said she still loved tennis and, though she realised how difficult it would be to get back to her best form, she was confident in her ability and experience.

'I've been doing this for my whole life. Once I start playing tournaments it will come back pretty quickly,' she said.

However, just getting on the court at all seems to have been a major challenge for Dokic. 'With my wrist, I thought I would never hold a racquet again after my surgery,' she said, explaining the surgery involved removing cysts between the joints, shaving tendons and tendon reconstructions in three fingers.

'The day after I couldn't move my hand. Even three months later I couldn't even write, let alone play tennis. From that point of view, I'm very lucky to be on the court and very lucky to be able to train to try and come back.'

She is coming back, but it's not a comeback. Dokic said she never retired, but was rather forced to the sidelines through long-term injuries, including a shoulder problem.

Asked if she considered pulling the pin, she said: 'Not really. I sort of feel like I was in retirement almost, because it's been a while and I just didn't play at all and took a break. Mentally I never really thought about it that way. Even though it was a long time - that's the only scary thing, that it's been nearly two years. But I'm just taking it a day at a time and we'll see what happens.

'I think it's going to take a while. It will take some matches, it will take some tournaments. As long as I'm healthy I think I will be all right. It will probably take a couple of months to get back into it completely. But I'm looking forward to that.'

Dokic has reportedly found peace with her father, Damir, and said her life had been good 'for a while'.

'A lot of things have changed. I'm in a completely different place. More experience - maybe not great experience. All the negative things have taught me different things. I have a whole lot of experience, not even for my tennis, just my life in general. I'm so happy that I've had the good and the bad. You've got to go through everything.

'The only thing that's been hard is the health issues. People don't realise how many health issues I had over the past five years. People sometimes don't know what's going on behind the scenes.'

Stage ready pensioner nominated for Merton Civic Award

An 88-year-old theatrical performer has been nominated for a Merton Civic Award for her contribution to arts and entertainment.

Thelma Ruby, who has performed with Dame Judi Dench and Orson Welles, has lived in Wimbledon for more than 50 years and trained to be an actress in New York during World War II.

She has performed at an annual event for the Wimbledon Guild, a charity which cares for elderly people, for the past seven years.

She said: 'I performed there in September, they do a lovely luncheon every year with a performance, and this year we were joined by the mayor.'

During her life she has had many career highlights, including performing with Dame Judi Dench in the musical Cabaret at The Palace Theatre, in Covent Garden.

She said: '[Dame Judi] is absolutely incredible and is just a wonderful partner on stage. She is a very special lady.'

Acting with Orson Welles in his adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV was another highlight.

She has played the part of the mother in Fiddler on the Roof four times, which she says is a wonderful musical, and she speaks of it in her one-woman show.

She was the first president of the Friends of Wimbledon Theatre.

She said: 'I was known as the fighting first president, as I campaigned to get better productions coming to the theatre. And I succeeded.'

Thelma Ruby was nominated in the arts and entertainment category of the 2014 Merton Civic Awards.

BBC could lose licence fee for sporting 'crown jewels' like FA Cup and ...

BBC spends £150million every year on sporting rights Rival broadcasters complain about lack of a level playing field Culture secretary Maria Miller warns licence fee is not a 'given right' Tory party chairman Grant Shapps warns BBC over secrecy and bias

By Matt Chorley, Mailonline Political Editor

PUBLISHED: 04:50 EST, 28 October 2013 | UPDATED: 06:10 EST, 28 October 2013

Some of Britain's biggest sporting events could disappear from the BBC unless the corporation cleans up its act.

Ministers have been urged to consider handing the slice of the licence fee used to buy up events like Wimbledon and the FA cup to rival broadcasters.

It is suggested that while the so-called Crown Jewels events in the sorting calendar should be on free-to-view channels, the BBC should not automatically receive the funding to air them.

The move marks a significant escalation in the row between the BBC and the government, in the wake of the Jimmy Savile and Stuart Hall sex abuse scandals and public outrage at huge payoffs to BBC managers.

Tory party chairman Grant Shapps warned at the weekend that television licence fee could be cut unless the BBC tackles a 'culture' of secrecy, waste and bias.

But the aggressive approach could go further, with ministers looking at breaking the link between the BBC and licence fee itself.

Every year the Corporation spends £150million buying the rights to major sporting events, including Wimbledon, the FA Cup, Six Nations rugby, Formula 1, which is now shared with Sky, and Premier League highlights for Match of the Day.

Rival broadcasters believe there should be a level playing field, with the BBC unable to give away for free events that they have to pay for.

The idea has been put to Culture Secretary Maria Miller to allow them to bid for a slice of the licence fee to air sporting events deemed too important and popular to be restricted to pay-to-view premium channels.

A source close to Mrs Miller said: 'There is a conversation to be had there as to whether the BBC should be funding things that are also covered by commercial broadcasters.

'There's an array of sporting events,' the source told the Daily Telegraph.

'It would impact on the licence fee. The money that was given to the BBC could theoretically be given to other broadcasters who were doing something that we would consider of public service.

'The BBC covers a whole range of events which private commercial broadcasters pay to cover.

'The licence fee is not a given right any more. There is an acknowledgement that the change in commercial broadcasters means this is something that needs to be looked at.

'If the BBC doesn't put its house in order we will bring forward talks on the royal charter and start to thrash it out earlier.'

The changes could be forced through as part of the renewal of the BBCs royal charter, due in 2016.

Tories argue that the £145.50-a-year licence fee would be 'too much' if the BBC failed to reform by 2016.

Mr Shapps, the Conservative party chairman, said the Corporation must rebuild confidence following the Jimmy Savile and Stuart Hall abuse scandals, controversy over fat cat salaries and pay-offs to stars and senior executives.

He also hinted at Tory frustrations with the BBC's perceived Left-wing bias - saying it faced a 'question of credibility' over whether it applies 'fairness' to its political reporting.

'People pay their licence fee in this country because people believe that we should have public service broadcast program-ming,' said Mr Shapps. 'Of course, there are lots of different ways you could do that. I would also say that £145.50 is quite a lot to pay for everyone in the country who has a TV.

'It is too much if we don't see the kind of reforms that all public organisations are used to, that the BBC isn't having to engage with as much as it could do.'

His intervention brought a sharp response yesterday from the BBC's former director-general Greg Dyke, who accused Mr Shapps of trying to bully the Corporation.

Mr Dyke said: 'This is an attempt to pressurise and intimidate the BBC, which is what governments do, and the BBC's job is to resist. This is so predictable.

'Honestly, I've been waiting for it to happen. Eighteen months from an election, the government of the day - it doesn't matter which government - decides to start pressurising the BBC and say, 'if we win again, we're going to take away your money'.'

BBC could lose FA Cup, World Cup and Wimbledon crown jewels over licence fee

The BBC could lose the rights to broadcast sport's 'crown jewels' including the FA Cup, World Cup and Wimbledon.

At present around £150million of the licence fee is used to buy up some of the world's biggest sporting events so they can be shown free-to-air.

But now ministers have been urged to consider handing that money to rival broadcasters.

From the World Cup to Wimbledon: time for retail planning

By Chloe Rigby

The World Cup, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the Tour de France, set to start in Yorkshire, are among the big events that will provide selling opportunities for online and multichannel retailers in the year ahead, it has been suggested.

Analysis from Savvy Marketing says that retailers and brands will need to work hard to boost their sales volumes next year, despite rising consumer confidence. One way to do that is to capitalise on popular events, and, says the company, now is the time to start planning.

'As well as using insight to gain a deeper understanding of the role these events play in the lives of shoppers, brands and retailers need to give greater consideration to how they execute campaigns in a multi-channel environment,' said Alastair Lockhart, head of insight at the retail and shopper marketing agency.

'Events are no longer the sole territory of superstores - indeed we suggest that some of the greatest potential event opportunities can now be found online and in convenience. There's a lot to get ready for!'

Savvy Marketing questioned 1,000 household shopping decision makers to find the following attitudes to key sporting events of 2014.

London's other Boris: Three

His fear is over Andy Murray's back injury, which has ruled the Wimbledon champion out of the climax to the season, the ATP World Tour Finals, which start at the O2 next Monday.

'It's no joke,' Becker says. 'Not a torn muscle, not a twisted ankle, it's a disc, so it's a very serious injury. We should all be concerned. To have surgery is not a minor thing. We don't know the extent of it. Murray's goal has to be to be back for the Australian Open.'

The first Grand Slam of 2014 begins in Melbourne on January 13 and if Murray can fully overcome his injury then Becker has high hopes for the British No1. 'He's in the prime of his life. At 26, he should be able to play at that level for at least another three years.'

Becker is optimistic that by then Britain will have discovered a couple of players who might follow in Murray's slipstream. 'You have a couple of juniors here, 18, 19-year-olds, very good,' reassures Becker, although he explains why he will not name them.

The problem then is that the focus is on them and I want to protect them a little bit. If you get more good players, the chances are that one very special one out of a group of 10 or 15 will appear. Leon Smith [the LTA's head of men's tennis] is doing a great job but we need more coaches like that who understand the game and promote it in the right way. Now is the time. Murray winning Wimbledon has changed a lot.'

But, in the space of a few months, can even Murray's historic triumph really have transformed British tennis? It was only four years ago that Pat Cash told me in a Standard Sport interview that British tennis was 'absolutely a white middle-class sport'.

Becker smiles when I remind him of Cash's comment and says: 'I like Cash, he says what he thinks. It can't happen overnight. It's not by coincidence that the Lawn Tennis Association have a new chief executive [Michael Downey].

'They could have prolonged the contract with Roger Draper for another five years. So there are reasons to believe that people are willing to change. Downey believes in the grassroots system and getting more young kids involved, which is great.

'They have the financial means to promote the game and, with tennis booming in this country, they have to take advantage [of Murray's win] to build something to last.'

Becker is ideally placed to judge the impact a Wimbledon champion can have on a nation. His own achievement in 1985 of becoming the first German to win the men's singles title in SW19 led to several top German players emerging. 'It did open a few doors and professional sport in Germany has never been the same since.'

We don't know the extent of Andy's injury. But he's in his prime and should be able to play at that level for another three years

He says this without a hint of bombast but admits that he found it difficult to cope with his triumph, which at 17 made him the youngest Grand Slam champion until Michael Chang beat that mark four years later at the French Open.

Becker says: 'I struggled with the expectations. It was very, very difficult coming back to Germany, being this sporting superstar when I was still so young.'

He accepts Murray does not have the same issue given he was 25 when he won his first Grand Slam title, the US Open, last year.

While injury will keep Murray out of the O2 tournament for the world's top eight players, form could stop Roger Federer appearing. For the second time in three seasons the Swiss has not won a Grand Slam and he is sixth in the race for London with one qualifying event left - this week's Paris Masters.

'If he does not qualify it will be a big blow,' Becker says. 'He's won it six times and people in London love him. If Federer wants 'it', he has it but he hasn't shown it to us lately. So I think next year will be a very important year for him to show the world that Roger Federer still has some gas left in the tank.'

Enough gas not to think of retirement? Becker will not be drawn on that, saying: 'Federer is a smart man and we've got to give him the time to make up his own mind.' But he adds: 'He knows the season was a surprise and he can't go on like this forever. The key is his motivation, his drive, his hunger. Is he willing to put in the hours and the discipline of what it takes?'

At 32, Federer is a year older than Becker was when, having lost in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1999, he retired. Reflecting on this, the three-times Wimbledon winner says: 'At 32, with a nice family and other commercial commitments, it is more and more difficult. Your body recovers more slowly. Your motivation goes, naturally.

'You cannot be up for every match and, once you've played Wimbledon 10 or 12 times, you've done it and know exactly what to expect. So are you willing to do what it takes to be the very best? He has split up with Paul Annacone, his long-time coach. The question is will he have a new one or will he do it on his own? That [getting a new coach] would tell me whether he's 100 per cent committed or not.'

The O2 will see Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal compete but Becker does not see some of the others, like Juan Martin Del Potro who beat Federer in the Basle final on Sunday, as challenging the world's top two. 'He's not been very consistent.'

Instead, he is much taken by a player who will not be at the O2 and who Federer struggled to beat in the quarters in Basle. The only problem for Becker is he cannot remember his name. 'He is that great player from Bulgaria. He is known as the boy of Sharapova but he should be known in his own right. What's his name again?'

After an assistant prompts him, Becker says of world No22 Grigor Dimitrov: 'He is very good. He should focus a bit more on tennis and less on Sharapova and he will do better.'

Becker also expects another player who will not be at the O2, the 15th ranked Pole Jerzy Janowicz, 'to make a mark next year'.

As for Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, who might still qualify for the O2, he says: 'They're top 10 players but they're lacking something to go into the top five.'

But even a top 10 is not possible for an American or an Australian and Becker, who faced formidable rivals from these two countries says: 'It's surprising that two of the leading tennis nations in the world don't have a player in the top 10. The American and Australian Federations are a little bit stuck in the past, which is why these countries have struggled. The people running them need to understand that it is a global sport.'

It is suggested that while the so-called 'crown jewels' events in the sporting calendar should be on free-to-view channels, the BBC should not automatically receive the funding to air them.

Avoid unnecessary travel in south London and Surrey during St Jude's Day storm, Met Office warns

6:11pm Sunday 27th October 2013 in News By Omar Oakes, Digital Editor

Tomorrow will see the worst storm to hit southern England since 1987, forecasters have warned

People should avoid unnecessary travel tomorrow morning during what is expected to be the worst storm for decades to hit south west London and Surrey.

The storm has been named St Jude after the patron saint of lost causes, whose feast day is tomorrow.

Paul Davis from the Met Office today advised people to avoid unnecessary travel on Monday morning, when winds of up to 80mph are expected.

Britain's weather service has issued an amber warning for the southern half of England for the storm, which has the power to bring down trees and cause building damage, which could lead to power cuts and transport chaos for commuters.

There is also expected to be between two and four cm of rain to fall within the space of six to nine hours overnight.

David Cameron said he has spoken to the organisations responsible for public safety during the storm.

The storm, travelling from over the Atlantic, is expected southwest England late tonight, before moving north-eastwards across England and southern Wales.

Heavy rain will follow with strong winds in the early hours of tomorrow, but the storm is expected to have moved out over the North Sea by lunchtime, leaving strong breezes in its wake.

Gusts of 115 mph were recorded during the Great Storm of 1987, when 18 people died and thousands of homes were without power for several days.

Atlantic storms of this type usually develop further west across the ocean, losing strength by the time they reach the UK and Ireland.

But this is expected to appear much closer to land, potentially moving across the country while in its most powerful phase.

We will keep you updated with the latest transport and weather news in south-west London and north Surrey throughout the day.

BBC spends £150million every year on sporting rights Rival broadcasters complain about lack of a level playing field Culture secretary Maria Miller warns licence fee is not a 'given right' Tory party chairman Grant Shapps warns BBC over secrecy and bias
