Merton Council's first basement policy imposes restrictions on Kenilworth Avenue digdown in Wimbledon

5:00am Tuesday 1st April 2014 in News By Louisa Clarence-Smith, Reporter

44 Kenilworth Avenue

Tighter rules on basement excavations introduced by the planning authority are clamping down on the 'digdown' trend.

Developers at 44 Kenilworth Avenue, Wimbledon Park, are among the first to be hit by new rules, which only approve significant excavations if a drainage strategy is produced.

The controversial extension, which will make space for an ensuite bedroom, hall, storage and lightwells, was approved, subject to conditions, at a planning meeting on Thursday, March 27.

A petition against the development, which includes a basement excavation and rear dormer roof extension, was signed by 27 residents.

Neighbours raised concerns about the basement's impact on watercourses, causing an increased flood risk and negative impact on the stability of adjoining houses.

Concerns expressed in 18 objection letters to the committee also included noise and disruption caused by building works, impact on a tree outside the house, loss of privacy and light pollution.

However, the development is one of the first to be subject to Merton's first basement policy, set to be formally introduced at the next full Council meeting on June 4.

Applicants for significant basement extensions now have to pay experts to assess impacts on drainage, flooding, ground water conditions and structural stability before excavating.

The proposed basement in Kenilworth Avenue has been significantly reduced in size from the original application, now located under the front part of the house, instead of the whole house, with no games room.

Homeowners now also have to produce a working method statement detailing the management of loading and unloading materials, control of dust and protection of the street tree.

The move comes after Kensington & Chelsea council announced similar restrictions on basement extensions, following concerns about noise disruption and structural damage to homes as underground extensions rise in popularity.

Children and their families put compost into pairs of tights and then added grass seed and a pair of stick on eyes to complete the animals, which when kept watered should grow long grassy hair within two weeks.

Alison Pelikan and Auriel Glanville of the Wimbledon Common Nature Club hosted the event on Saturday, March 29.

Mrs Glanville, club leader, said: 'We had an enjoyable morning making hairy hedgehogs and families were very interested in joining the Wimbledon Common Nature Club.

'Our thanks to Craig Benn who was so helpful.'

Whyteleafe's up and coming master of the motor, Charlie Robertson, underlined his status as one of the UK's best young racing drivers at the opening weekend of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup.

Driving on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, the 17-year-old debutant won the second of three races to end the day in second place overall - having finished third in race one and 11th in race three.

Robertson, backed by Investigo and racing with HHC Motorsport, said: 'I've been a little bit surprised with how competitive and quick we have been on our first weekend in the championship.

'The team is new to the GT4 SuperCup, like me, and we're still learning about the car so what we've achieved this weekend is really encouraging. I'm so happy to have won a race on the first weekend, it's a fantastic start.'

He added: 'Finishing on the podium in the first race is what I really wanted to do. Qualifying was good, our pace was good, but unfortunately the component failure led to the session ending early for me.

Disappointed: Dons boss Neal Ardley

AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley will take Saturday's 1-0 League Two defeat at Mansfield on the chin.

A seventh-minute goal was enough to condemn the Dons to their first defeat in five games, leaving Ardley a disappointed man.

George Francomb and new signing Kwesi Appiah went close, but it was skipper Alan Bennett who almost equalised but he saw his header cleared off the line.

Ardley told Dons Player: 'It is real disappointment, but the lads had a go and they battled hard.

'We knew it was going to be physical and they would go route one. They made it hard, but we lacked quality when we did get in the right areas.'

He added: 'We have to take it on the chin. It was a horrible game on a bobbly pitch against a team that were never going to play through midfield at all.

'They were big and strong and credit to them. I'm not going to say anything against them.

'They got an early goal and they held on for the rest of the game. I thought we could have got one back but we lacked quality in the final third.

'It was disappointing, but the boys had a right go. It was a reasonably even game, but they were bigger and stronger than us.'

Six-year-old Simran Saraon with her mother Suneet where the incident happened

A petition calling for a pedestrian crossing on a busy road has been given added weight after a young child was struck by a car within days of it being launched.

Yamini Franzini is calling for a crossing on Leopold Road, Wimbledon.

Just two days after it was launched, her neighbour six-year-old Simran Saraon was crossing at the junction with Dora Road to get to school with her mother Suneet when she collided with a car, getting stuck under its tyre.

She was treated by paramedics and the police were called although no action was taken against the driver of the red Toyota Prius.

The youngster had bruising to her foot and now refuses to walk to school.

Mother Suneet Saraon, said: 'We were waiting to cross the street and the traffic had stopped on one side and on the other side there wasn't any.

'Everyone is always nervous about that road, it is a curve and cars come down at high speed and brake at the last minute.'

Mrs Saraon said her daughter fell into the road when she collided with the car and they had to ask the driver to reverse to release the youngster's foot from under the car.

Mrs Saraon had the signed petition in her bag when the incident happened on Monday, at about 8am.

Mrs Franzini, and her husband Nick are collecting signatures from people living and working in the area in a bid to get Merton Council to act.

Mrs Franzini said: 'People are always complaining about how difficult it is to cross the road. 'There's nowhere safe to cross at the lower end.

'It's so risky trying to cross the road without dying.'

The petition is supported by the Leopold Road Traders Association, who worked with Merton Council to introduce traffic calming measures a couple of years ago.

Member Katja Nuutinen said: 'People come from Gap Road and speed along the road. 'There were so many reasons why we couldn't put a crossing in. We exhausted every single option.

'I am happy for someone else to try.'

So far the petition has attracted about 65 signatures. To see it, click here or visit shops in Leopold Road.

Titanfall cheaters will be exiled and forced to face other cheaters

Respawn Entertainment isn't going to be banning Titanfall cheaters. Instead, they'll all be lumped together into a separate matchmaking pool that pits rascal against rascal. You can claim an unfair edge in the man-on-mech shooter if you really want to, but you'll be singled out and stranded on an island with all of the other idiots. None put it better than Respawn in its official announcement of the newly launched anti-cheating measures.

'Great news: you get to keep playing Titanfall! Less-great news: you only get to play with other cheaters,' an update on Titanfall.com reads. 'You can play with other banned players in something that will resemble the Wimbledon of aimbot contests. Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck.'

Cheeky!

Non-cheaters won't be able to help their friends, but they will suffer the same consequences for playing with those friends, for a limited time at least. If you jump into a cheater's party or invite one to join you, you'll end up in the cheater matchmaking pool. It probably won't be much fun, but as Respawn notes, 'you do not get permanently tainted just by playing with a cheater.' If you think you've been banned unfairly, you can shoot an email over to anticheat@respawn.com to plead your case.

Respawn locks Titanfall cheaters into "the Wimbledon of aimbot contests"

Respawn is now banning Titanfall cheaters - but it's doing so with a twist.

The developer began issuing bans on Friday 21st March for the PC version of the shooter using FairFight detection technology after collecting information on cheaters since the game's launch.

If you're banned you'll see the 'FairFight cheat detected' message in the image below, Respawn said on the Titanfall website. If you don't see that, you aren't banned.

Now here's the interesting bit: if you're banned you can keep playing Titanfall, but only with other cheaters in what Respawn calls 'the Wimbledon of aimbot contests'.

'Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck.'

Meanwhile, when anyone in your party is banned, then everyone will be treated as if they are also banned for that play session, so there's no point sending your older mate up to the bar to get you a pint.

'If you stop inviting your cheater friend, you will once again get to play with the non-cheater population,' Respawn added. 'You do not get permanently tainted just by playing with a cheater - you are only banned for cheating if you are actually cheating.'

Reckon you've been banned unfairly? There's an email for that: anticheat@respawn.com.

Mansfield strike early to beat AFC Wimbledon

League Two: Mansfield 1 AFC Wimbledon 0

Adam Murray scored the only goal of the game as Mansfield beat AFC Wimbledon.

The Stags took the lead on seven minutes when the player/assistant manager fired home a free kick after a foul by Sammy Moore.

Wimbledon huffed and puffed but were unable to breach Mansfield's defence.

Adam Murray helped Mansfield leapfrog AFC Wimbledon in the League Two table with victory against the Dons.

The Stags captain lashed in a 30-yard free-kick to give the home side the lead, after Ollie Palmer's attempted clearance put off keeper Ross Worner.

George Francomb had a chance to equalise from Kwesi Appiah's cross but sliced over.

Mansfield's Jamie McGuire then denied the Dons a late equaliser, clearing Alan Bennett's effort off the line.

The Dons were not helped by a 15th-minute change that saw Darren Jones carried off on a stretcher after taking a high boot in the face from Anthony Howell.

The visitors rarely threatened however, with Francomb's sliced shot and Kwesi Appiah's weak half-volley their only chances of note.

The result sees Mansfield, who now lie 12th, achieve back-to-back wins for the first time since September while the Dons drop to 16th, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Mansfield manager Paul Cox told BBC Radio Nottingham:

'Until we are mathematically safe we have to keep going.

'I am proud of the whole football club. The players were running on empty at times but we carried them over the line.

'We have got to keep going, but hopefully we have sent the fans home happy today. It's a long hard season and we are feeling it right now, I am glad we haven't got a game midweek.

'We will regroup, charge the batteries and go again next Saturday.'

Mansfield Town 1 AFC Wimbledon 0: Match report

ADAM Murray's first half goal secured a second successive victory for Mansfield Town as they beat AFC Wimbledon, 1-0.

Although neither side offered a great deal in front of goal, the Stags midfielder ensured his team won two games in a row for the first time in six months.

Boss Paul Cox made two changes to the side which started at Victoria Park in midweek.

Ryan Tafazolli returned in defence after recovering from a knock to the foot, with John Dempster dropping to the bench as a result.

And with James Jennings suspended after picking up his tenth booking of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 victory at Hartlepool United, Colin Daniel came into the first XI.

Back-to-back victories for the first time since September was the target set by the manager.

And Cox's men made the perfect start towards achieving that when they broke the deadlock with seven minutes on the clock.

Murray took over set-piece duties in Jennings' absence and curled in a free-kick from out on the left. Ollie Palmer tried to get a glancing header on it, but it was the Stags skipper who claimed the goal.

And for the most part, the hosts looked pretty comfortable with their lead.

Chances were few and far between for either side in a reasonably quiet first half, with the Mansfield back line largely to blame for any pressure they did come under - some poor clearances giving Wimbledon the opportunity to press.

The visitors though, were unable to take advantage and offered little in front of goal.

Substitute Kwesi Appiah went as close as anyone to finding an equaliser when he capitalised on a mistake by Martin Riley.

The Stags defender dallied on the ball, allowing Appiah to sneak in and set-up a one-on-one with Alan Marriott. It was the home keeper however, who won the race for the ball.

Ten minutes later, the same Dons player had another chance when he met Francomb's right-hand cross, but the volley was straight at Marriott.

As the first half neared its conclusion, it began to spark into life.

Mansfield had made several good runs forward, only with little end product. However, just before the whistle, a Murray corner required tipping over as it looked to be curling in.

And the goalscorer set up Matt Rhead with a delightful through-ball, with Ross Worner having little trouble claiming the resulting shot on the turn.

The visitors made the brighter opening to the second half, with Francomb blasting over Appiah's left-hand cross when given time and space at the back post, while Aaron Morris curled a long-range effort wide.

Stags, for their part, had looked a little flat since the interval, as the game descended into a scrappy affair.

Cox tried to change that by looking to his bench. The double introduction of Sam Clucas and Lindon Meikle, with a switch to 4-4-2, had worked well in the last two games, and the manager turned to the duo again, with Jake Speight not far behind.

The latter looked particularly lively when he entered the fray just past the hour.

A slip by Alan Bennett gave Speight the chance to run at goal, but he was beaten to the ball by Worner. Good link-up play with Rhead then saw him curl an effort goalwards from outside the box, which was caught by the keeper.

As the match entered the final ten minutes, the visitors applied the pressure in search of an equaliser.

Jamie McGuire cleared Bennett's header off the line, while Marriott thwarted a powerful strike from Francomb.

Stags staged a late rally as they attempted to put the result beyond doubt, with Murray whistling in another free-kick, Clucas heading at Worner and Rhead driving the ball goalwards.

But though their search for a second proved fruitless, they hung on for all three points.

MANSFIELD: Marriott; Tafazolli, Riley, Sutton, Beevers, Howell (Clucas 54), Murray, McGuire, Daniel (Meikle 54), Rhead, Palmer (Speight 65). Subs not used: Dempster, Stevenson, Clements, Westlake.

AFC WIMBLEDON: Worner; Fuller, Bennett, Jones (Appiah 15), Antwi, Francomb, Morris, S Moore, Richards (Arthur 51), Collins, Wyke (Saint-Luce 62). Subs not used: Sweeney, L Moore, Pell, Brown.

Ross Hutchins looking forward to Davis Cup and Wimbledon after surviving cancer

Tennis - Hutchins says he has applied for a wildcard at the All England Club

Tennis - British tennis player Ross Hutchins continues his successful comeback from cancer as he was named as a reserve in the British Davis Cup team that takes on Italy next weekend.

Hutchins commented in an interview with http://ift.tt/1nI5ZI3, 'To be called up is very exciting. The team is announced next week so I might yet force my way in, but if not, I am happy with any role be it supporter, training partner or playing. The Davis Cup is a huge priority for the top players and the standards are extremely high. Italy will be a hugely tough match as they have some excellent players, and it is being held in Naples. But we had a great win in America to get to this stage, so we are up for this. We have bonded as a team and we have top, top players.'

Other players in the team are Andy Murray, Daniel Evans, James Ward and Colin Fleming.

Hutchins also commented that he has applied for a wildcard for Wimbledon. 'I can't wait for Wimbledon, it's such a great tournament and I'm hoping for good times on and off the court. I have already applied for a wildcard, but I should get my place through protected ranking.'

Tough ride: Ross Hutchins' comeback from serious illness has reached a milestone DeadlinePix SP26869

Wimbledon 's tennis star Ross Hutchins has served up another ace in his continuing comeback from cancer.

Just three months after getting the all clear following a year-long battle against Hodgkin's Lymphoma, the 29-year-old has been called up as a reserve for the GB Davis Cup squad.

And he could yet feature in the quarter-final against Italy, as the team is yet to be announced ahead of the April 4 start.

Away from the spotlight, and since his high-profile appearance at the Australian Open in January, Hutchins has been regaining his strength and tennis acumen with doubles partner Colin Fleming at a host of tour events around the world.

But now he is hoping to force his way into GB's first Davis Cup quarter-final tie in 28 years, and then there is the small matter of Wimbledon in June.

He said: 'To be called up is very exciting.

'The team is announced next week so I might yet force my way in, but if not, I am happy with any role be it supporter, training partner or playing.

'The Davis Cup is a huge priority for the top players and the standards are extremely high.

The team consists of Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, Daniel Evans, James Ward and Fleming.

Hutchins' comeback has included an appearance in the February final of the Great Britain F4 tournament with Luke Bambridge, and a last 16 spot at Indian Wells with Fleming earlier this month.

And with every passing game, set and match, the former world number 26 doubles player is getting stronger.

'Our standard as a doubles pairing is improving all the time, which comes down a lot to my being able to train every day,' he said.

'The more I get to play, the stronger I get, and now I am just very excited about the future.'

He added: 'I can't wait for Wimbledon, it's such a great tournament and I'm hoping for good times on and off the court.

'I have already applied for a wildcard, but I should get my place through protected ranking.'

Away from the court, Hutchins has been named as the new tournament director for Queens, where it is hoped his standing in the sport will attract big names to south west London.

Hutchins said: 'It was a surprise to be asked and a real honour to take the position. I cannot wait to get working at it.

'I have always loved playing at Queens, it is such a big event in the calendar now and is local to me.

'I'd like to continue doing this kind of work once I retire from tennis.'

He added: 'I also want to continue any charity work I can, but this is such a huge opportunity for me.'

Ready to jump: fearless fundraisers at the Salisbury airfield

Most people bake cakes or run marathons when they want to raise money for charity, not jump out of a plane.

But 21 brave fundraisers took on a terrifying challenge when they skydived 10,000 feet to raise money for St Raphael's Hospice.

The group, many of whom have personal connections with the hospice, met at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury on Sunday, March 23, to complete the feat.

So far they have raised £12,362.

St Raphael's Hospice provides specialist medical and nursing care for people with cancer and other terminal illness, as well providing support to their families and friends.

The hospice supports more than 1,000 patients a year, costs £5 million a year to run and relies on charity fundraising, donation and legacies for 80 per cent of their funding.

Skydivers on the day included two staff members from both Cigna Insurance Services and Wilkinson in Sutton who are both supporting the hospice as their chosen charity.

Kerry Thomas, community fundraising manager for St Raphael's Hospice, said: 'I am so pleased everyone got to skydive today. The group were fantastic and have worked hard to raise sponsorship which goes towards the vital work of the hospice.'

A high-octane race between a sports car and a wing-suited sky-diver has helped win a production company international recognition.

Staff at Want Some Media, based out of Wimbledon Studios, are delighted to be in the running for the International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) Awards for its campaign for Nissan.

Their film produced for the campaign, which shows a race between a man in a wingsuit and a Nissan down a mountain, has attracted almost 1.4million YouTube views.

Want Some Media's executive producer, Des Paul said: 'We're obviously delighted to be nominated for the IVCA award, especially to be recognised in such a strong field of competition.

'The number of Youtube hits on the film we made for Nissan just goes to show that when you create something that is genuinely compelling to the audience, even it is branded content, you can produce a piece of work that people actually want to watch and share, which is key in this digital age.'

IVCA Awards are recognised as the premier marks of excellence for effective business and public sector communications in video, interactive projects, business television and digital media.

Winners will be announced on Friday, March 28 at an awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

Murray to lead Britain in Davis Cup

London - Wimbledon champion Andy Murray will lead a four-man team when Great Britain compete in their first Davis Cup quarter-final for 28 years, away to Italy in Naples next week.

Joining Murray in the British quartet will be Dan Evans, Colin Fleming and James Ward while Ross Hutchins, who recently recovered from cancer, is the reserve.

The winner of the tie will play either Kazakhstan or Switzerland in the Davis Cup semi-finals in September.

Murray, Ward and Fleming all featured in the 3-1 defeat of the United States in February.

'It will be a good challenge playing on the clay in Italy,' Murray, who recently split with coach Ivan Lendl, told the Lawn Tennis Association website on Tuesday.

'They have some very good clay-court players with a passionate crowd behind them.

'It will be a tough weekend and the games will be tight, but it's great playing in big matches like this in the World Group,' the Scot added.

British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith, explaining the composition of the team, said: 'We have selected our top three singles players for the squad who between them have the most Davis Cup experience which is what we need for this tie.

'Obviously we are delighted that Andy is playing, and both Dan and James have enjoyed impressive Davis Cup wins over the last few years.

'We also have strong options in doubles. Andy and Colin have enjoyed success together before, having reached the final in Montreal last August and also winning their last Davis Cup doubles rubber against Croatia in September.

'Ross Hutchins could be brought into the final four depending on what options we feel are best for the tie. Both Colin and Ross also have a lot of Davis Cup experience between them.' - Sapa-AFP

Titanfall dev now enforcing PC bans, will put players in 'the Wimbledon of ...

developer Respawn Entertainment is now enforcing anti-cheating bans on the game's Windows PC version, according to a post on the game's official website.

The developer has been 'collecting data' since the game's launch but 'not immediately enforcing bans.' Respawn revealed earlier this month that it was tracking players exploiting the game with third-party devices like 'aimbots,' 'wallhacks' and other exploits that offer advantages to players who use them. The developer's policy changed last Friday, March 21, when it 'started banning cheaters in Titanfall.'

Those banned from the game will see the message in the screenshot above. They'll still be able to play Titanfall but only with other flagged players.

'You can play with other banned players in something that will resemble the Wimbledon of aimbot contests,' an FAQ on the game's official site reads. 'Hopefully the aimbot cheat you paid for really is the best, or these all-cheater matches could be frustrating for you. Good luck.'

Parties with a banned player will treat each player as banned for that play session. Remove that player from the party, and you'll be able to play with those not flagged as such. Those who believe they've been unfairly banned for cheating can contact Respawn through a dedicated email address available in the FAQ.

To track culprits, Respawn enabled GameBlocks' FairFight, server-side anti-cheating software designed to identify unruly behavior.

'Players' actions are tested against multiple statistical markers to identify cheating as it occurs,' the software's description reads. 'FairFight crosschecks these indicators using objective server-side reporting tools and takes action when both approaches correlate to cheating. FairFight's graduated penalty system (warning/restriction/suspension) has been shown to effectively suppress and deter 'cheaters' by imposing prompt and appropriate penalties automatically, while simultaneously notifying them that continued misbehavior will result in harsher penalties.'

Andy Murray focused on the future after parting ways with Ivan Lendl

Spectacular as it was, the pairing of Murray and Lendl was almost as unlikely, but after two-and-a-quarter years together the Wimbledon champion is on the lookout for a replacement.

As both insist the parting of the ways was done with a handshake and is amicable, Murray was in Miami preparing for his opening match in the defence of his Sony Masters title.

Lendl has a home not far away in Florida and to underline the mutual agreement on the split, could be seen in the Murray box cheering him on in the next few days.

Murray is now seeking another major coach to help his friend, Dani Vallverdu, and old friend Leon Smith, the British Davis Cup captain, could be in the frame, along with the experienced Darren Cahill, who has offered advice before.

Or perhaps he might stick with his idea of something different, as he did in luring eight-times Slam champion Lendl back to tennis and turn to someone like Andre Agassi or John McEnroe.

The link-up with Lendl, 54, was a masterstroke which surprised everyone in the game, but the two were well matched in their attitudes and in suffering losses in Grand Slam finals before finally overcoming the odds.

Lendl accepted the challenge, saying he would almost certainly not have tried coaching any other player, but he made it clear all along that being back on the old circuit was not part of his long-term plans.

He has started playing more exhibition matches, recently being seen in Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Nashville, Charlotte and London, and there are tennis clinics in the Canary Islands as well as opening new courts in the US where he also runs the Ivan Lendl Junior Tennis Academy.

Those commitments, plus his family life and love of playing golf, have seen him only at the Australian Open this year in the Murray box, and it was not enough for the Scot.

'Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me,' said Lendl. 'He is a first-class guy.

'Having helped him achieve his goal of winning major titles, I feel like it is time for me to concentrate on some of my own projects moving forward including playing more events around the world which I am really enjoying.

'I will always be in Andy's corner and wish him nothing but great success as he too goes into a new phase of his career.'

Murray won the Olympic gold at Wimbledon and then ended the 77-year drought in British men's tennis by taking the Wimbledon title to go with the US Open crown he claimed in 2012.

'I'm eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far,' said Murray, who credits Lendl with instilling the extra belief that he could win Slam tournaments.

'As a team, we've learned a lot and it will definitely be of benefit in the future. I'll take some time with the team to consider the next steps and how we progress from here.'

Murray has recovered physically from back surgery last September but although he has worked hard to regain full fitness, victories have been hard to find.

He has only made it to one semi-final of the five Tour events he has played but won both his singles matches to help GB beat the USA in the Davis Cup and says he will definitely play next month against Italy in the quarter-finals.

His ranking is now six and losing early in Miami will drop him further.

After Miami he moves into his least productive part of the season, on clay, but he missed the French Open last year with injury and could collect valuable ranking points there.

Full Time Match ends, Northampton Town 2, AFC Wimbledon 2.

Sammy Moore scored a stoppage-time equaliser as 10-man AFC Wimbledon denied struggling Northampton a win.

The away side took a first-half lead when Tom Richards crossed for George Francomb to finish well.

After Jack Midson handled inside the box and was sent off, the Cobblers equalised through a Darren Carter penalty and the midfielder then curled a shot into the bottom corner.

But deep in injury-time, Moore got on to Alan Bennett's cross to earn a draw.

The result means Northampton are two points from safety in League Two, with both Portsmouth and Wycombe on 42 points.

Latest Hercules Wimbledon news: Pole vaulter Murray sets new club record

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club's veteran woman pole vaulter Alison Murray smashed her own club indoor record at the David Weir Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Murray, 47, was joint winner of the women's event at the London Pole Vault Academy Invitation meeting with a 2.87m clearance.

Her winning clearance was 17cm higher than her previous club record set at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in February.

Elsewhere, Alex Bruce-Littlewood helped England to a team victory in the Home Countries cross-country international at Wollaton Park, Nottingham, on Saturday when he finished third out of 29 runners in the senior men's race in 32 minutes.

He was 27 seconds behind the race winner, and the third scoring member of the winning English team.

Hercules Wimbledon's over-45 veteran Tom Cheetham continued his preparations for the London marathon next month by posting a fast time in the Hastings half-marathon on Sunday.

He was 11th in his age category in 1.26:58, just over half-a-minute slower than his best time for the distance.

Also on the road, Hercules Wimbledon's Kieran White clocked his fastest time for two years when he finished 33rd out of more than 2,000 runners in the B&Q Eastleigh 10km road race on Sunday in 33:00.

He was 34 seconds outside his best time set in the Honington event in 2012, and was the fourth over-35 veteran to finish.

Hercules Wimbledon's veteran over-45 runner Lisa Thomas had another record-breaking weekend.

After finishing fifth in the women's race in the Wimbledon Common parkrun on Saturday, she was runner-up in the women's race in Perserverance half-marathon in Richmond on Sunday in 1:39:02, a club veteran women's over-45 record.

It was the longest race of her athletics career and her time smashed the previous club record of 1.44:00 set by Alison Purnell at Henley in January 2011.

First Hercules Wimbledon finisher was over-45 veteran Stephen McDuell who clocked a personal best time of 1.28:52.

Gina Galbraith clocked a personal best time in finishing 138th overall out of more than 3000 runners in 1:30:45. Mike Leigh clocked a Hercules Wimbledon men's veteran over 70 record of 1:57:48.

Hercules Wimbledon's road runners will be in action in the final East Surrey League event of the season at Poole Road Recreation Ground, West Ewell, on April 3.

The races will be run over a four-mile circuit and start at 7pm.

* Hercules Wimbledon's track and field training sessions take place at Wimbledon Park athletics stadium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6.30pm and Sunday mornings at 10.30am. Further details from coaching coordinator Maurice Sharp on 020 8337 8707.

A ball held by Wimbledon Village Stables has raised £10,000 for charity.

The black tie event was held at the Cannizaro House Hotel in Wimbledon, and was attended by over 200 people including stables members, business people and sponsors.

Tennis star Boris Becker and TV presenter Jenny Rudall were also on the guest list.

The party went on until 3am and guests were treated to a raffle, a dinner, and performances by magicians.

A silent auction was held, with prizes including a London 2012 Olympic shirt, signed by the gold medal winning dressage team, and a holiday at a cottage in the Cotswolds.

Carol Andrews, owner of the stables in Wimbledon Village, and organiser of the ball, said: 'Everyone had such fun. The evening went so quickly.'

Money was raised for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and World Horse Welfare.

Trailing 2-0 at home to Cheltenham at the weekend, League 2′s AFC Wimbledon staged a remarkable comeback as they scored three quick-fire goals in three minutes to end up winning the game 4-3.

According to the BBC match report, Jack Midson eventually bagged the injury time winner for The Dons, but it was three terrific minutes for the home side (or three terrible minutes for the opposition) that proved to be crucial in deciding the outcome.

Danny Hylton scored either side of Jake Nicholson's equaliser as the Cheltenham defence ended up looking leakier than secrets-leaker Edward Snowden eating Swiss cheese out of a sieve on a banjaxed holey boat.

Watch the official AFC Wimbledon highlights below, complete with a handy onscreen clock to demonstrate just how speedy the super comeback took. Unless you happen to be a Cheltenham fan of course. In that case just stick your head in a bucket and completely ignore the video below...
