AFC Wimbledon v Plymouth Argyle: Match preview

PLYMOUTH Argyle's latest recruit Andy Kellett has admitted he is a very attack-minded left-back.

Kellett enjoys taking on opposing players, and will hope to get a chance to show that when the Pilgrims play AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow tonight (7.45pm).

The 20-year-old signed on a one-month loan from Championship club Bolton Wanderers.

He was then an unused substitute when Argyle beat Carlisle United 1-0 at Home Park the following afternoon.

Kellett's style of play should be suited to the 3-5-2 formation which manager John Sheridan has recently adopted.

He has been brought in from Bolton while Argyle's promising 18-year-old left-back Ben Purrington is recovering from a badly broken right wrist.

Kellett trained with the Pilgrims for the first time yesterday afternoon, but before that he met the media for the first time since his signing.

He told Herald Sport: 'I'm positive when I get the ball. I like to run at players and take them on as I'm quite quick.

'I know I shouldn't but I focus more on going forward than I do defending, which isn't really a good thing.'

Kellett admitted his favourite left-backs were Roma's former Chelsea and England international Ashley Cole and Jordi Alba, of Barcelona and Spain.

'I have always looked up to Ashley Cole and Alba,' said Kellett, who is a product of Bolton's youth academy and has made three substitute appearances for their first team.

'I don't try to be like them but I take some of the things they do and try them in training, and see what works and what doesn't work for me.'

Argyle will have their joint best defensive record in League Two put to a stern test by Wimbledon.

The 13th-placed Dons possess the best strikeforce in the division in Adebayo Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs.

Between them, the pair have scored 14 of Wimbledon's 20 goals in League Two this term.

To put that into perspective, their combined tally is the same as Argyle have achieved collectively.

Tubbs is the equal leading marksman in League Two with eight goals, level with Northampton Town's Marc Richards.

Akinfenwa is one of five players who have netted six times this season, with Wycombe Wanderers' former Argyle loan signing Paul Hayes also among them.

So the fifth-placed Pilgrims will have to show all of their defensive resilience to cope with the threat of the Dons' dynamic duo.

Argyle kept their seventh clean sheet of the season - and the fourth in the last six matches - when they beat Carlisle.

They have conceded only eight goals in 13 league games, which is the joint best in the division with leaders Wycombe, and one fewer than fourth-placed Luton Town.

Tubbs, 30, is on a season-long loan to Wimbledon from Championship club Bournemouth.

He made an immediate impact for the Dons, scoring one goal in five of his first six matches.

Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley tried hard to sign Akinfenwa last summer but the powerfully-built striker opted for League One outfit Gillingham instead.

He went on to make 37 appearances for the Gills, including 19 starts, and grabbed 10 goals, as well as providing assists for many more.

However, Akinfenwa could not agree new terms with the Kent club at the end of last season and Ardley snapped him up.

The 32-year-old did not score in any of the first eight games of the season for Wimbledon.

It was not until mid-September that he finally opened his account with two goals in an excellent 3-0 win at home to Burton Albion.

Akinfenwa also netted twice when Wimbledon beat Bury, another of the fancied teams in League Two, 3-2 at Kingsmeadow on October 11.
