Wimbledon double with Brother John and Ballymac Niall
IT was a case of Wimbledon saving the best for last as Seamus Cahill's Brother John scorched to a 28.25sec 10-1 surprise in the last race at the track on Saturday - the final open over the William Hill Derby trip until the first round in a fortnight's time.
The sponsors slashed him from 125-1 into 33s. He had rocketed out of the boxes (4.74 sectional) and made all. But he was crowded at the bend as Sidarian Blaze (4.85) went up blisteringly fast and tried to get on his inside, so the time arguably could have been better.
Sidarian Blaze might have been beaten, but he ran well, stopped in his tracks at the first and third, before getting run out of second through a storming effort from Owen McKenna's Irish Puppy Derby champ Vanrooney.
He had walked out, was crowded with Woolie No Shoes on the second before taking off and get second, beaten just over three lengths. He is an exceptional talent with the first three home key players in the upcoming £200,000 event which closes to entries at noon on Wednesday.
The going had speeded up after the bowser went round prior to the 9.30pm. Officially 0.10sec fast for trials before racing, the track was rated normal races 1-5, 0.1osec slow races 6, 7 and 8, normal for race nine and, once the water soaked in, +10 for race ten, and then +20 for the last three events.
Roxholme Ted was earlier also cut by William Hill to 25-1 (from 66s) after an impressive win on markedly slower ground.
He put his rivals to the sword in Div E, breaking clear (4.79sec sectional) and scoring by over seven lengths for Hayley and Mark Keightley from Data Romeo, clocking 28.46sec.
In the following race Derby champion Sidaz Jack was beaten into third by Cahill's Ballymac Niall, who showed good early pace (4.76) to lead at the turn. He scored by nearly four lengths from a running on Greenwell Lark in 28.80sec
Sidaz Jack went down the back nicely before easing at the third bend. He clearly remains ring-rusty and was pushed out to 25-1 by Hill for a Derby double. Connections stated he was reported fine afterwards but will be checked out in the morning.
Barefoot Agent, who last Saturday was still running in the Kirby Memorial at Limerick, made the most of being re-routed following elimination there with a gallant win in Div H.
Jolly Bulseye (4.87) had taken them along, but Paul Hennessy's Barefoot Agent (4.93), after moving wide early, came through to challenge at the third, where he was stopped in his tracks, before battling back for a half length win in 28.77sec. He is 40-1 with Hills.
The bowser went round after this race (the 8th, 9.15pm)
Redbrick Stuart (4.85sec) took Div O for Charlie Lister when the field bunched at the turn, and he held his position to edge ahead of Any Dak (4.80) and Brindkleys Queen (4.78), scoring by a length in 28.68sec.
There was an 8-1 surprise in Div U where Bruno Berwick's Salad Dodger (4.88) came through to pick up favourite Farloe Calvin (4.84, who had kicked on at the second) on the run-in for a gallant length and a half win in 28.43sec.
Rayvin Lad (4.81), who had won the previous Saturday, had led to the second - the form looks solid.
Aclamon Messi, who caught the eye in trials last week, made a winning British debut for June McCombe in Div N. Third to Vanrooney in the Irish Puppy Derby, he flew out and made all in 28.47sec. He is one to note.
Hills representative Scott Murray agreed: 'We will keep him on our side.' The dog is a 33-1 chance with them.
Two Irish raiders filled the forecast in Div D (10.15pm), with Owen McKenna's Fiery Splendour leading at the third after Kilara Missy, who had set off clear, broke down - impeding Hennessy's Barefoot Scholar.
Fiery Splendour (33-1 with Hills) won by over two lengths n 28.48sec.
Sparta Flame (4.79sec) made all for Gemma Coney in the opener, clocking 28.72sec.
Longmeadow Tash missed the break and clipped the fence at the turn - finishing last.
There was a 12-1 turn-up in Div R, Kevin Boon's Laughing Sam breaking in front, and although beaten by the pace up of Thats The Dream, and shuffled wide at the turn when Viscount Rambler went straight on, Laughing Sam took off out of the second turn and kicked clear for victory in 28.94sec with Rebellious Khan also producing excellent back straight speed to take second.
