The HSBC Road to Wimbledon 2014 began in local schools, parks and tennis clubs all across the UK and for the first time in its history, India, where two masters events held in Mumbai and Delhi offered juniors from a country that loves tennis, and boasts the second highest population in the world, a dream ticket to play at The Road to Wimbledon finals at the All England Club.
The huge success of the new international event was evident when Siddhant Banthia, a 14-year-old boy from Pune, India, became the 2014 boys' singles champion by defeating the top seed from Middlesex, Maxine Trenakhin, 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-0.
And, Nell Mille r, 14, of Kent, last year's semi-finalist, went all the way in 2014 to lift the girls' title defeating Surrey's second seed, Jodie Lawrence-Taylor, in straight sets 7-6(5), 6-4.
In the doubles, it was Banthia once more and compatriot Adil Kalyanpur who claimed another superb victory for India. In the girls' doubles final, Miller and Emily Appleton got the better of the Indian girls' duo Aarja Chakraborty and Shivani Ingle in straight sets.
And in the first ever County singles finals, Alasdair Hambrey from the North of Scotland, and local girl Alice Klugman representing Surrey took home the coveted trophies.
The County doubles tournament witnessed 12-year-old Klugman win once again with Natasha Forrest of the Channel Islands. Berkshire's Ethan Chow along with Benedict Turley from Bedfordshire claimed victory in the boys' final.
And many of the juniors from across the UK arrived in the morning to play tennis with Tim Henman in the famous WJTI grass court clinic where Head Coach Dan Bloxham and the former British Number One put Road to Wimbledon competitors through their paces and inspire them with great games and advice.
The trophy presentation featured Tim Henman, Angela Mortimer, John Barrett, Paul Hutchins, Julian Tatum, Denise Parnell and Peter Finn who congratulated all the winners and runners-up for their efforts this week.
