Petra Kvitova hammered Eugenie Bouchard at 2014 Wimbledon and has raised hopes of tennis lovers all around the world. Anyone who saw her play during the final would surely affirm my view that when the Czech is playing this way, it's hard to describe her tennis as anything but perfect. It's also hard to comprehend why she has won just two Major titles so far, or why she so frequently descends into whirlpools of ghastly errors and frightfully poor shot-making. To date, she has reached the semifinals or better of every Grand Slam tournament but the US Open. And the upcoming Major is the US open, where she will be tested.
In the key US Openwarmup tournament in Montreal, two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova was ousted only in the 3rd round, which is not the ideal preparation for the left hander before the Final Slam just a couple of weeks away. Then again, perfection is not normal and humans aren't supposed to be flawless. In her quest to achieve the offensive ideal whenever and wherever she plays, in her desire to end the point on her terms no matter how desperately she may be cornered, Kvitova often ends up erring on the wrong side of the line that separates genius from insanity.
But she never stops trying, and from where I'm looking, that's the most anyone can ask of her. In the ultra-competitive world of professional tennis, there is not a single moment to rest and Kvitova, bless her heart, never does. She is the No. 4 ranked player and will be carrying high hopes come the US open. She does the long hours on the practice courts, she fights through her asthma issues and she puts the bad days behind her and will surely put the Montreal disappointment behind her.
The result of all the hard work and moving ahead may not be year-long consistency or unstoppable dominance of the women's tour, but the occasional moment of glory when the stars align and the strokes stay within the lines. She would hope just like Wimbledon, her stars are perfectly aligned during the US open to complete a Major double.
There has been much made in the media and social media about the tendency of Kvitova to play 3 set matches. She's even been given the affectionate nickname 'P3TRA' because of this. She would like to avoid those long three set matches to go the distance at the US Open. Kvitov a is known for her fast left-handed serves. At the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, she hit 36 aces, the third most of any woman. Something close to that would help her conquer the title and make it a special year to remember.
The next warm- up event to the US Open is at Cincinnati, where the Czech left hander would like to win the title and enter the US Open with confidence to make it a double to cherish. The 24 year old has the play to defeat the best on her day and would like to use her powerful left-handed shots and variety, which has helped her win twelve career, singles titles.
