Archant
A man was attacked with 'extreme violence' in his own home and his wife taped to a chair by three masked men in an aggravated burglary in Wimbledon.
Police have released a shocking photo of the man's facial injuries, which are described as 'life-changing', in the hope it will convince somebody who knows the identity of the remaining suspect to come forward.
A spokesman for the Met said two of the attackers were arrested at the scene following the burglary on Monday night, but CCTV from Wimbledon Town Centre shows the third man escaping.
Police were called around 10pm on Monday night to reports of a burglary in progress at an address in King's Road, SW19.
'Response team officers attended within a matter of minutes and apprehended and arrested two suspects in their late 20's at the scene,' the spokesman said.
'A third suspect, also believed to be in his late 20's, made off on foot in the direction of Wimbledon Town Centre.
'He remains outstanding and enquiries into his whereabouts are currently ongoing.'
He said officers are also keen to speak to anyone who saw a silver Volkswagen two-door cabriolet style car which was believed to have been used by the suspects.
'We understand that just before 10pm, the male occupant, aged 55, opened the front door to three men who entered his home,' added the spokesman.
'All had their faces concealed. One of the suspects then violently assaulted him.
'A 50 year-old woman at the address was then threatened by the remaining two men who attempted to tape her down to a chair.
'Two residents who had been upstairs at the time were able to call 999 for help.'
The injured man is currently in a South London hospital receiving treatment for multiple facial injuries and bruising to the body and limbs.
He is undergoing surgery to the eye and his condition is described as life changing.
Police say a number of personal items were stolen from the address, some of which have been recovered, after they were discarded by the suspects as they tried to evade officers.
Detective Inspector Dan O'Sullivan, of Merton Burglary Squad, said: 'The level of violence used was extreme and has left a victim seriously injured and traumatised.
'I must stress that this appears to be an isolated incident, and such cases are thankfully rare.
'However, this serious attack is now subject of a meticulous enquiry whilst we work to support individuals affected by the events and the local community.
'Officers are currently conducting high visibility patrols and speaking to residents to answer their concerns.'
Both arrested men are currently in custody pending further investigation, police confirmed.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the incident room on 020 8649 3159, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
