Stanley Tomchin Sponsors Wimbledon Trip

SANTA BARBARA, CA - Stanley Tomchin, Turnberry resident and Stirling Club member, teamed up with tennis director Marty Hennessy to host a European Leadership Tour for a group of children from the Vegas-based Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation. Eight years ago numerous Stirling Club spearheaded the foundation, which has been offering help to disadvantaged children ever since, introducing them to tennis, mentoring them and providing education to thousands of at-risk kids and teenagers every year. Their leadership program has a 100% success rate getting children into college on scholarship for tennis and academics. Last summer, many of the foundation youth earned the opportunity to go to Wimbledon, attend leadership lunches and tours of the great European landmarks.

The foundation's captains from the leadership program were invited to attend a special designation often referred to as the 'seniors.' Another highlight of the trip was a lunch with Tim Henman's family and seats in his VIP box. For the young tennis players it was an once-in-a-lifetime experience to get so close to a tennis legend who successfully played for England for many years. But organizing special events and trips for their protégés is only a small part of what the foundation is all about. The main effort goes toward making a difference in children's everyday lives by following the foundation's mission to inspire children in need. Through far-reaching leadership programs they introduce recreational tennis to as many children possible, while at the same time offering a high performance element allowing children to go as far as a college scholarship, if they choose to do so. Currently the leadership program maintains 25-40 players and has a 90% success rate in getting children off the streets, into the classroom, onto the tennis court, and into college scholarships.

'The foundation has already changed my life, now I am going to Europe, I don't even know what to say,' said Edgardo Ureta, who credits the foundation for getting him a scholarship to play tennis for Hartford University. 'Most my friends are in trouble, one is in jail, none are in college and I'm on the dean's council, going to Wimbledon and getting to meet many amazing people. So many days I am overwhelmed with happiness and appreciation for all of these opportunities.' Opportunities like that are made possible by generous donors like Stanley Tomchin, who is not only an active tennis player himself, but also an active supporter of the Marty Hennessy Jr. Tennis Foundation.
