AFC Wimbledon have always struggled for cash, but the fortunes of the south Londoners look set to change thanks to the most unlikely of benefactors.


Best-selling American author John Green has pledged revenue he makes from online gaming to the Wombles after learning of their demise and subsequent rise up the football pyramid.


In a video explaining the reasons for his pledge, Green describes the Dons as 'the most awesome football club in the world'.


Football-mad Indianapolis native Green is a renowned video blogger, creating a YouTube channel entitled VlogBrothers with his brother Hank seven years ago, which now has 1.7million subscribers and over 400m views.

Green's Let's Play channel called Hankgames enjoys revenue that has passed five figures and so he has decided to spend some of that on his beloved Wimbledon.


Financial security is a constant worry for the 1988 FA Cup winners who reformed in the ninth tier of English football in 2002 and are now owned by loyal supporters.


AFC Wimbledon commercial director Ivor Heller, speaking to the club's official website, said: 'This has been one of the most exciting and unique sponsorship deals that I have been involved with.


'John's knowledge of the club is astounding and goes to show what a global reach AFC Wimbledon has. We look forward to working with John on many projects in the future.'


Green, a video blogger with a worldwide following, became a passionate supporter of the Wombles is a highly celebrated writer of fiction books for young adults, including winning the Printz-award for his 2006 debut novel, Looking for Alaska.


In 2012, he reached No 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list with The Fault in Our Stars.


He has highlighted AFC Wimbledon's incredible decade of history to his 1.9m Twitter followers and sizeable viewing public, from losing their club to another city to reforming and rising rapidly through the non-league pyramid, before finally gaining promotion back to the Football League in 2011.
