Diane McLean: Wimbledon campaigner behind the Night Of Passion
DIANE McLEAN, the We Want Wimbledon campaigner who has organised tonight's 'Night Of Passion' element to the William Hill Derby quarter-final card, is hoping for a big turnout at what is traditionally one of the lesser-attended Derby rounds.
'We are celebrating Wimbledon's 86th birthday and hoping to do with a bit of style,' she said. 'Hopefully the weather will stay with us and encourage people to come out for what is a fantastic night's racing.
'We've produced a special commemorative souvenir, brilliantly designed by Paul Millward, which will be free to all racegoers. The booklets can be collected from the Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare stall near the entrance to the downstairs facility, while those in the restaurant and executive boxes will find them on their tables.'
The eight races supporting the Derby quarter-finals have all been sponsored - four opens and four graded - with unique trophies reflecting the evening for all. 'The support we have had from right across greyhound racing has been fantastic,' added McLean, 'and I'd like once again to thank everyone who has allowed us to hopefully make the night so special.'
Entry to the meeting is free through the voucher published in today's Racing Post which also includes a free drink, while the 'house full' signs have gone up on the Wimbledon restaurant where the special £19.28 a head offer - reflecting Wimbledon's year of opening - proved hugely popular.
Among those dining will be a group of local residents with McLean saying: 'Their support for greyhound racing to continue at Wimbledon, and opposition to football, is going to be vital if and when we get to the planning stage. I hope they thoroughly enjoy their visit and see for themselves what a fantastic night out greyhound racing is for all the family.'
There will be a raffle in aid of retired greyhounds with the star prize being a specially-commissioned Steve Nash montage of all 29 Derby winners at Wimbledon to date.
Wimbledon have published the supporting trap draws (Derby Plate and Champion Hurdle) for Saturday. Both events were well oversubscribed and look highly competitive. Go to draws.
