Authors are visiting thousands of children across Merton to help launch this year's competition for young writers.

Schools will be welcoming writers including Sarah Lean, Stephen Butler and James McNally all this month in a series of events to linked to Wimbledon BookFest and the Young Writers' Competition for schools held alongside it.

Schools including Priory, Garfield and Holy Trinity are among the 15 schools to receive the literary guests ahead of the October festival.

Fiona Razvi, festival director of Wimbledon BookFest said: 'We have had 2,000 young people take part in the last couple of weeks.

'It is great getting kids reading and they are getting their stories out there.'

The young winner of the writing competition will get an iPad and the top entries are published in a book of winning stories.

Wimbledon BookFest will be held from Friday, October 3 to Sunday, October 12 this year.
