Racenight Jenny sets new Wimbledon clock

Tony Collett: delighted with Racenight Jenny

RACENIGHT JENNY set the William Hill St Leger quarter-final alight with a brilliant track record performance in the opening quarter-final over 687m at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Tony Collett's bitch followed up her British debut heat win by pacing up to lead at the first bend and quickly taking command.

Favourite Chicago gave valiant pursuit but was never getting there and went down by three lengths with the merit of his efforts highlighted by a winning time of 41.19sec, five spots inside Romantic Rambo's previous best.

'It was a bit of a rush job but she's coming stronger as the competition has gone on. It's really exciting, we have a nice group of dogs,' said Collett.

Romantic Rambo looked on course for a huge run himself when bounding clear in the third semi but sadly broke down at the third bend. Kevin Cobbold's Select Stayers winner suffered a broken hock and was made comfortable before being taken home.

His departure from the contest left Millwards Teddy in front and Dean Childs' dog went away to beat kennelmate Billys Bullet by six lengths in 41.51sec.

Hayley Keightley's Roxholme Dream led from the first bend in the fourth-quarter final and confirmed heat supremacy over King Kane in 41.59sec, while Liz McNair's Farley Chicken asserted on the final lap to take the second in 41.72sec.

Draw for Friday's St Leger semi-finals - first: 1 Wiki Waki Woo, 2 Billys Bullet, 3 Racenight Jenny (m), 4 Killieford Khali (w), 5 King Kane (w), 6 Farley Chicken (w).

Second: 1 Chicago, 2 Teejayspowerhawk, 3 Hather George (m), 4 Roxholme Dream (m), 5 Beatties Wild (w), 6 Millwards Teddy (w).

**THERE was a shock before the start of the meeting when strongly-fancied Touch Tackle was ruled out as a non-arrival with trainer Jim Daly delayed by traffic. Trap two was vacant in the second quarter-final.

**LENSON SANCHEZ set the standard in the RFS Puppy Derby with an authoritative performance in heat three of the 480m Wimbledon competition.

Leading early, Pat Buckley's dog galloped on resolutely to come home eight lengths to the good of Watch Your Face in posting 28.43sec.

Buckley had Ballymac Gordie in heat six and he turned second behind Seamus Cahill's Ballymac Brogan but the leader was not for catching and kept on well to beat staying on ante-post favourite Likeitalot in 28.82sec.

Cahill had initiated a Puppy Derby double and treble on the night when Who Needs Help took the second heat in 28.95sec, the competition started with victory for Dean Childs' Millwards Whitey (28.67sec), Corren Price's Gainstown Beaver (28.61sec) easily landed the odds in heat four and Kevin Boon's Kakantu pounced late to win the fifth in 28.91sec.

*Draw for Friday's Puppy Derby semis - first: 1 Who Needs Help, 2 Droopys Roller, 3 Lenson Sanchez, 4 Likeitalot, 5 Ballymac Brogan (m), 6 Kakantu (m).

Second: 1 Millwards Whitey, 2 Harrys Gamble, 3 Aghadown Cain, 4 Gainstown Beaver (m), 5 Honest John (m), 6 Watch Your Face (w).

Third: 1 Ballymac Gordie, 2 Farloe Lara, 3 Best Boy Ethan, 4 Killure Tiger (m), 5 Dragon Posse (m), 6 Aimnfire (m).

**Tony Collett's excellent night was rounded off when Lenson Tiggy made all in Peterborough's Alan Speechley Fengate Collar final.

The destination of the £2,000 first prize was never in doubt after he broke in front and he ultimately came home just over two lengths clear of Mays King in 26.17sec (-10).

The S&D Bookmakers Sprint Trophy final over 250m saw Mark Wallis's Aero Twizzle cheat a tough draw in five, flying out to make all in 14.96sec, while Dave Lee's Kerries Choice beat fellow 8-1 outsider Sunday Rain to take the S&D Stayers Trophy over 620m in 38.32sec.

**Pat Buckley was also on the mark in Ireland where his dual Derby finalist Mind The Net landed the opening heat of the Gain Feeds Select Stakes over 525 yards at Waterford in 28.37sec. Other heats went to Tynwald Bish (28.49sec) and Southest Susie (28.59sec).

**At Limerick, first round track record breaker Droopys Nidge won again in the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger second round even though Robert Gleeson's star had to work hard before mastering Burgess Oscar close home in the fifth, posting 29.62sec for the 550 yards.

Buckley was also responsible for the fastest time of the night here courtesy of Paradise Silva's 29.52sec win in the finale, while other heat winners were Emers Superstar (29.58sec, soon well clear), General Wolf (29.74sec, kicked clear at half-way in heat seven, Kippers Usain was eliminated after missing the break and running into first bend trouble ), Ballyana Foxtrot (29.75sec), Vulturi (29.84sec, got up a short head win in heat three, catching Metro Jack on the line ), Dromore Premier (29.97sec) and Lemon Pumba (30.16sec).
