Tennis - What better way to boost the popularity of a sport in a country than have one of your own players win the most prestigious title in the game. Especially if it comes after nearly eight decades. But that has not turned out to be the story in Great Britain's case.
In July this year, Andy Murray became the first Brit in 77 years to win the Wimbledon men's singles title. But that win has not translated into more people picking up the racket and hitting the tennis courts.
According to figures from Sport England's Active People Survey, 39,000 fewer adults over the age of 16 (in England) played tennis once a week in the year to October 2013 than they did in the previous 12 months.
Sport England director Phil Smith commented, 'We've probably finally dispelled the myth that a British guy winning Wimbledon would do something to increase participation figures. It's not that simple to translate into a weekly habit of ordinary people playing a sport - it takes more than just a Wimbledon winner.'
