Eastbourne, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Agnieszka Radwanska will have plenty of time to practice for Wimbledon after the top-seeded Pole was again shown an early exit from the tune-up tournament in Eastbourne.
Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova pulled off the upset on Monday, claiming a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) triumph, sending Radwanska to her third straight first- round loss at the Wimbledon prep.
Radwanska won the Eastbourne title in 2008, but was taken out in the first round by Tsvetana Pironkova in 2012 and last year lost to Jamie Hampton in her opener. It might be a good omen for Radwanska, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2012 and advanced to the semifinals last year.
A pair of seeded players won Monday, as Germany's Angelique Kerber and 2009 Eastbourne champ Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark each advanced in straight sets.
The fifth-seeded Kerber notched a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over American Alison Riske and the eighth-seeded Wozniacki downed Aussie Samantha Stosur, 7-5, 6-4.
Next up for Kerber will be Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski. Wozniacki will next face American Sloane Stephens, a 6-2, 6-4 victor over France's Caroline Garcia.
Defending champion Elena Vesnina of Russia also moved into the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over China's Peng Shuai.
Tuesday's first-round schedule includes matches for Petra Kvitova, Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka.
The second-seeded Kvitova was the 2011 Eastbourne runner-up and the Wimbledon champion a few weeks later. She'll face Czech veteran Lucie Safarova. The third-seeded Jankovic will meet American Madison Keys and the fourth-seeded Azarenka will take on Italy's Camila Giorgi.
Tommy Haas will miss the remainder of the 2014 tennis season because of a right shoulder problem that will require surgery.
Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek won her opening match at the Topshelf Open on Monday, then got engaged after the match.
Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland failed to reach the second round of the Aegon International when she was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia on Monday.
