BBC commentator on Wimbledon champ Bartoli: 'Not a looker'

Marion Bartoli captured the first major of her career Saturday at Wimbledon, in a dominant two-set performance over Sabine Lisicki. She became just the sixth woman to win Wimbledon without dropping a set. She's also a genius:

Moments after the greatest moment of Bartoli's career, BBC Radio 5 commentator John Inverdale posed the following question to his listeners.

'Do you think Bartoli's dad told her when she was little 'You're never going to be a looker? You'll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight.''

Inverdale's shocking comments were met with immediate disgust.

Do you think John Inverdale's mother told him when he was little, 'You know, you'll always be an idiot so, um, yeah. That's it.'

Later in the segment, Inverdale attempted an apology.

'We poked fun, in a nice way, about how she looks ... but Marion Bartoli is an incredible role model.'

A BBC spokesman has since apologized for Inverdale's comments.

(Thanks to the Telegraph for bringing this to our attention.)
